Tales from today's commute....

IIRC I'm down to about 450 miles on the rolling 30-day mean (from a high of 650-700 miles during the summer) however I expect this to fall further as the weather worsens. It's still by far the greatest distance covered for the longest sustained period that I've ever managed, so I mustn't grumble

My commute is down big time. I used to have a minimum of 11 miles to the old office and it was delightful to extend it. We moved office though and the new office is less than a mile from it. I also moved close to a group ride start. I did get of early for a while but its not an exciting commute so most days (which is only twice a week at most) is just the minimum 4 miles to the station and the 0.8miles the other side, and I get back for the group ride in the summer or turbore training in the winter.

I bloody hate that. I have to use an old radiator at work to dry my gear. A while back I but all the gear on to dry, then forgot to turn it on. That was a nice damp ride home.

Im guessing theyve turned the heating down, it was always a good few degrees warmer than the rest of the building, to save money, which makes sense in summer, but at this time of year its going to be a pain if I cant dry kit out properly anymore if I get soaked riding in, and I cant even resort to the old tactic I had before access to the drying room, of using the hand dryer in the toilets, not least they also dont chuck out heated air anymore, but theyve been replaced by these rather useless low energy ones that dont even dry your hands properly anymore.

A strange one this morning with the weather. I was expecting biblical proportions of precipitation. At 10pm last night the heavens opened up and let go with a serious amount of rain which continued through the night.
So, dug out the winter gear for this mornings ride. Leg warmers, warm long sleeve jersey and waterproof. The temperatures were showing single digits,
Cycling to the station at 7am was wet, but not too bad.
All the trains were fubard with my normal train cancelled, so had a 10 minute wait for the next service which is a fast, but changed to slow stopping at all stops along the line. Got to Bromley with heavy rain. By the time I had got out of the station and on my way it had abated some what but it was very blustery. And so it was all the way into work. A few dodgy slide blusters aside it wasn't too bad and I wasn't too wet by the time I had got to work.
The rain and winds are here to stay for the days duration. Hopefully I'll get a very nice tailwind helping hand back to the station later.

Commuting home last night got to section of the cycle path which was a bit dark, streetlight out. Shoulder-checked as I went to overtake a pedestrian, vague shape behind I thought was a bike. As I overtook and moved back over left, fool on escooter behind cut in between the verge and myself...on the left. Wearing all black, black scooter, no lights:cursing:

Cooler and just damp for most of the ride then pissed it down for the last few minutes. Excellent and invigorating!

Now on full lights morning and night - I think it's probably more important in twilight than full darkness TBH. But still maintaining shorts.

Colder but not too bad. A few spots of rain. Light traffic again, plus a couple of fast cyclists to keep up with. Fun.

Looking forward to riding through dawn some more as the clocks change this weekend. Don't forget to charge your lights for the evenings!

Half term next week. Not commuted for about 3 weeks due to dodgy knee/hip and a holiday in between. Noticed how much darker it is on my return to the UK, especially mornings, but this will change with the clocks. We'll be into dark commutes home next week. Only got two days on the bike next week as the van needs a service and MOT, so got a hire car as the dealer isn't near home or that close to work - could have taken the bike but didn't fancy the route across town.

A much better day today then yesterday. I got absolutely soaked on the way back to the station. But I had the foresight to pack a change pair of shorts in the rucksack so once at the station changed. Not much worse then sitting on a train in wet shorts. But, storm Benjamin was a bit of a damp squib, passing by my part of north Kent more with a whimper then a bang.
Today is a different matter, sunny blue skies, less of the wind but a bit chilly. Long finger gloves for the first time this season. Quite a nice ride in. Traffic light and what cars there were behaving. Only Food delivery moped riders acting like dicks as usual.
