Very vague I know, but I'm considering getting a few high viz/reflective bits and bobs.
My commute is well-lit and mainly off-road, so it would be more the occasional/rare night time trip down badly lit roads.

I am vain, so not keen on an industrial hi viz jacket
My rucksack has reflective bits, so I'm mainly concerned about my front- maybe an armband? Or should I just go the whole hog and get a hi viz windbreaker.

I have an Altura jacket that looks quite plain but it's very reflective especially at night.

Hi-viz colours themselves don't work at night any more than just wearing a bold colour. I'll usually be wearing red or blue.

What works at night are reflectives, so jerseys/jackets with reflective details, a reflective sticker across the front of the helmet (if you wear one). Use those and you'll show up in headlights from a long way out. Pair that with some good lights and jobs a goodun.

EDIT: have a look at the DHB Flashlight range.

ALDI hi-viz rain jacket and rucksack cover if needed.
Only whip it out paniers if needed, usualy when dull, not dark. From bit of research and observations from driving in the dark, I chose to have "normal" coloured clothing at night but with reflective strips incorporated. Erm, probably from ALDI again. I'm a cheapskate... but visible!

I sometimes sling a reflective yellow Sam Brown belt on over my black gilet on dark mornings.. my rain jacket is hi-vis yellow with reflective details, and at this time of year I have lights on for the morning and evening commutes.

Advantage of the Sam Browne belt is that it packs up small and goes over anything else you might be wearing.

Thanks @vickster , very stylish but not my size unfortunately.

I like the idea of reflective stickers on my helmet.

I though of volvo life paint, for example on the straps of my rucksack (which is pretty much always with me) but it washes off and needs to be resprayed every week. Does anyone know of a longer lasting or permanent alternative?

I tend to ride in dark clothing with strategically placed reflectives. I picked up these bands from Planet-x a couple of weeks ago for just £2.99

They're broader than similar bands and fairly long, designed to snap-wrap around wrists or ankles but you could always affix them lengthways to panniers etc.
Always a good idea to have something like that on your legs as the biomechanical movement is good at grabbing attention.

There's also an outlet on ebay that does reflective bands and tape in many colours, including black. When I find the link I'll post it.
