Tax self assessment

I am currently filling in my self assessment tax return. My current bill is about £3,000 and my account is £1,400 in credit.

Am I correct in thinking that I've just got to make a £1,600 payment or do I have to pay the full £3,000 and claim back the £1,400 over-payment from last year?

give it a week or so after submitting it and your account will update and yes you will just owe the net £1600, which you probably dont have to pay until January, unless you're on a payment on account regime.
