Morning. I had an awful night's sleep. I finally drifted off around 4am. Up at 7am and seeing to the animals. MrWC has gone out on business. I've harvested courgettes, squashes & beans. I've also got a huge pan of chutney on the go and it should be ready for bottling.. oohh... in about four to five hours

81.6g That's the weight of the egg Anode has just laid. Considering that a commercial 'medium' egg is 53g-63g, and a commercial 'large' 63g-73g... I wonder if her eyes watered? Mind you, she seems utterly unfazed as is usual with Anode's egg laying

Does egg weight pretty much correspond to size, or is there much variation in egg-density?

egg weight varies according to several factors including:-

breed of hen
diet
age of hen
position of egg in clutch.

The first two are obvious. Age - as a hen gets older on average she lays fewer eggs than in her 'prime' but what eggs she does lay tend to be on average bigger than during her main egg-laying life. Hens lay a 'clutch' the egg laid on the first day tends to be the biggest of the clutch. She'll then lay one a day until the clutch is complete. Then she'll have a day off & then a new clutch starts.

Lunchtime cuppa anyone? Kettle's on.

WC - what do you do with all those eggs? Do you ever get tired of them? Or do you disguise them and turn them into cakes:tongue:

I rarely get in here because the regulars always seem kind of scary in a 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest' kind of way, but I am in need of sustenance.

So here I am.

I always thought this was a haven of calm amongst the CC goings on. Maybe I just don't recognise my own battiness, but then I'm only a semi-regular so maybe I'm not batty after all:biggrin:.

Seeing as it's you I'd better use the Yorkshire Tea . Here you go.
