Thanks for the tea. What's going with this hare then?

My friend is doing her PhD on the archaeological evidence for fur use, and part of her research will involve examining the criteria usually used to 'prove' an animal was used for fur - generally cut marks on certain bones like the ankles and muzzle. She has done taxidermey in the past, and has always questioned whether a decent skinner would cut into bone - apart from anything else, it blunts your blade and you shouldn't really need to do it. The people who came up with the whole cut mark theory may have never skinned an animal, or only done it as bodging amateurs. So she's been doing some experimental work to see what really happens. She did a stoat last week, with flint blades.

In fact, if you get it fresh enough - IE only just dead - you can virtually skin most small animals with bare hands, especially if you aren't bothered about preserving all the little fiddley bits like feet, but only want a vaguely rectangular piece to sew to others to make clothes. Anyway, it looks like the current cut mark theories are not all that sound.

Then she wanted the advice of another friend of ours (who trained as a vet) on gutting and jointing it for stewing/roasting, so it won't go to waste. And I think it's good to know how to do these things.

I've kept the tail and a foot, I think those are suitably Mad Aunt things to show nephew Oli when he's old enough....

@ Speicher - I don't lack a tea - I've got one right here!

I've just had a rather frustrating hour booking train tickets to Provence for the Mont Ventoux thing. By the end of it I was ready to eat my desk. It's a good job that SNCF aren't in the room or I'd be asking Arch to put her new dismembering talents to good use. [/rant]

And relax.

Desperately trying not to think about that. Be afraid. Be very afraid. *hides*

I'm trying to resist the temptation to buy a pair of stick on googly eyes to turn it into a rather crass fluffy desk ornament....

I have a lamb's tail at home, I picked up in a field, with rubber band still attached.

Suddenly, I'm reminded of Eeyore, and his missing tail which turned up as Owl's bell pull, and had to be nailed back on...

I don't actively go out looking for things to cut the tails off, y'know, it's just I like interesting things.

Your coccyxes are safe from me.

It's not my coccyx I'm worried about!

We're probably safe then, LotTP.
