I have just done one of those self-test quiz thingies, on hsperson.com. It was thirty questions about how sensitive you are (about your surroundings etc, not if people call you a nincompoop ?). If you answer yes to more than 14 Qs, then you are "probably" highly sensitive. My score was 22.:ohmy:

Whenever I've done those tests I've gone right off the scale too:blush:.

I have often thought that I notice lots of things that others do not.
The number of times that I have avoided an accident because I could "see" what was going to happen before it did, must be enormous.

I also notice the absence of things, that would normally be in a situation, and that in turn alerts me to "changes" or similar. It is hard to explain, except to someone who experiences the same "oddities" themselves.

Part of my mental state is a condition referred to as 'Hyper Vigilance' which means I am constantly evaluating and referencing my surroundings.

The downside is that I can get stressed, or worse still, panic in unfamiliar environments, the up side is it's very useful for helping people find things and when cycling.

"Hyper vigilance" that's what I should call it, instead of two paragraphs of explanation.

I was once in France on a train trip. The Tour Guide had noticed I could work things out. So when we were pushed for time, he asked me to set off from the Station towards the town, and he thought people would just follow me. We left the Station, and came to a roundabout. I decided to go straight on. Some one asked me how I knew which way to go. I was amazed that they had not noticed that to the left and right, was nothing in particular, but that straight on, and not too far, was a busy road. Clue: busy road taking traffic into the village.

When we reached this road, I noticed the brown and white signs with the outline of a steam engine, (which is what we were there to see). He STILL did not notice this, and refused to believe me when I said I had not been there before.

Meeting people with such low observation skills, made me think my observation skills were just normal. It is only in the last eight years or so, have I reallised that my observation skills are much higher than the average. This has in fact saved my life on at least three occasions.

I get extremely uncomfortable in unfamiliar surroundings, if there is also a lot of people. I can cope with lots of people in familiar surroundings.
This means I like to go on holiday to somewhere comparatively quiet.
Ie The Lake District in October. St Ives at Christmas. Austria is also brilliant out of season, ie early September. Italy is diificult and the Far East would be a nightmare, I think. Canada in March was also excellent.

There is a very thin line between hyper vigilance and good old common sense IMO.

My fave use of this 'trick' is if I am visiting a fried's house I can see/find things that they thought they'd lost/misplaced.

I could have used your skills when I lost my address book.

 OK this will test you - can you guess where I found it?

You can have one clue, I lost it in late spring, and did not find it again till the end of summer.

I'll make a hasty 2 guesses and say it was in a winter/wet weather coat or bag? Or hidden amongst books.

You've had all that building work going on at yours I don't know where anything is anymore:biggrin:

Well very close, it was in the drawer with my socks.:blush:
I did not need socks in the hot summer of two years ago.
OOpps, I forgot to mention which summer it was, that was the clue you needed.:ohmy:

Please do not try to guess how it got into my sock drawer.

Things put away for the summer.

I was lacking certain info that I needed such as, do you have a cordless phone, do you take the phone book out with you as well, blah blah blah.

That summer I spent going between London & San Francisco and the remainder was spent prone with a nasty leg injury, the fact it was scorchingly hot often slips my mind!:rolleyes:

Funny you should say that! I have just heard a loud whoshing sound and the sound effect caused by a rough saw and a violin bow. I think it was TheDoctor returning home after his visit to south Wales.

Btw Marinyork, I thought you were in Beer? now you are in Tea?

I have added a clue on the Long Multiplication Thread, just in case anyone else is following it - unlikely I know, but possible.
