My head hurts. I think it's the packing tape fumes, combined with the Skreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise. Thankfully, we're about to shove off home....

Spending most of tomorrow trying to enthuse 14 year olds about Archaeology. Joy. You know how you volunteer, and wish you hadn't? Still, there might be a small paid job in the offing....

Might have to have comfort pasta tonight. It's like normal pasta, only there's a bit more of it. Or I could do a fry up. No, pasta is less messy to wash up.

I volunteered to begin teaching a group of nine and ten year olds trombone. A local school found it had somehow acquired thirty-odd trombones.

I can tell you, it's not just the mind that boggles!

There have been some weeks when I despair: they all seem determined to destroy their instruments and are unable to produce anything remotely like music or even remember how hold them.

There are one or two who are determined and quite promising - even they go away dispirited on the bad days - the more disruptive kids have stopped them learning much.

But then there are other weeks when they've all done a bit of practice, and we make real progress. There's one lad, hopelessly dispraxic, who rarely gets a note right, but has thoroughly learned his notes and their positions and helps the others (who haven't) out. Those weeks, we all go away grinning.

So, stick with it Arch. You never know how inspiring you might be!

Once volunteered to do a couple of lectures on business studies; ended up on doing 10 lectures each 2 hours long on business studies for 3 different years for studies students in the 15-16 year old range.

We'll see. On past experience, there will be a few who are really good, a few who just sit and text, and then the rest....

Last thing like this we did, the group were great, and feedback from one said she was going to do archaeology because of it, so that was nice. The group before that were like wading through treacle....

Anyway, I'm counting the days until I go down to see my sister and Oli again.
