You know how you volunteer, and wish you hadn't?
I volunteered to begin teaching a group of nine and ten year olds trombone. A local school found it had somehow acquired thirty-odd trombones.
I can tell you, it's not just the mind that boggles!
There have been some weeks when I despair: they all seem determined to destroy their instruments and are unable to produce anything remotely like music or even remember how hold them.
There are one or two who are determined and quite promising - even they go away dispirited on the bad days - the more disruptive kids have stopped them learning much.
But then there are other weeks when they've all done a bit of practice, and we make real progress. There's one lad, hopelessly dispraxic, who rarely gets a note right, but has thoroughly learned his notes and their positions and helps the others (who haven't) out. Those weeks, we all go away grinning.
So, stick with it Arch. You never know how inspiring you might be!
