Two flat round cakes, I guess, one pink, one yellow, cut into concentric rings and then swapped....
Looks like a higher cake:marzipan ratio, which might reduce the cloyingness.

Actually, thinking about it, it would be possible to bake a cake in concentric rings, if you carefully piped the two batters into the tin - a more geometric variation on marble cake...

Yes, I much prefer Choccy cake to that Battendownthehatchesberg cake.
No reason why one couldn't make a battenberg style but with chocolate and plain cake.

It's true, the divisions might be curved. Depending on how stiff the mix was, and how tightly one could pack it into the tin, without losing the lightness and air...
