Kettle's on!

I don't know about other parts of the country, but here in central York (normally a relatively mild micro-climate) we've had either falling snow, or lying snow, or non-thawed ice or slush now for over a fortnight, with continuing cold fronts forecast - I can't remember the same in the 10 years I've been here. I know it's cold, and a nuisance for travelling (I would have been gutted if sis and family hadn't been able to make it up to Leicester for Xmas), and dangerous for those less steady on their feet, but...

It is a 'proper' winter. We had a taste of it last year, but this is 'proper'. I sort of prefer it to the dank mild wet stuff we've had for the last few years...

Thing, is, will we get a 'proper' summer to match it?

I don't know about the proper summer, we could get the same as last year or worse.

Bolton is still full of snow, my mums getting a bit sick of it, its worse than here in York. Was expecting it to be clear here as we emerge over the other side of the hill on the M62.

Oh well hopefully it will be gone before I go back to college on Monday.

Goodnight everyone and happy new year.

Everything here has a white coating on it and has done all day.
It has given me that really deep down chill that doesn't go away easily even with the heating on and continuous cups of hot tea.

Last year wasn't that bad, was it? No heatwave, but that's a good thing for me. Just warm and dryish is good. I don't remember any flooding, anyway...

Well, I only came on here while I had my dunky egg breakfast, must nip out now for some shopping. Thought about a bike ride, but there's still snow, and any quiet roads might well be icy, so I'll find stuff to do indoors.

(So, Ill be back later!)

Well that's the hens sorted. One Anode egg collected. Nolo was in laying mode as I went out there. As soon as she saw me she went into FoodMode and ran about the floor of the run following me as I put out fresh breakfast for them. A hen in mid-egg-laying wanting food is an odd sight... running about the run with her legs crossed and doing her best pelvic floor exercises as she tries to cram as much food as possible into her beak... think small child desperately holding on, trying to stop having a wee and dancing about from foot to foot with pained expression... it's about the same, but hen-shaped.

I must go out on the bike.
Cabin fever is gripping me.
I have become listless, grumpy and needlessly bored.

I'll have a cup of tea before I go tho.

It's this cold in London, just without the snow.;)
Coming home from being out on the bike is a thaw point, all my muscles are warm enough it's just the bones underneath that are frozen.

Continuous tea for me too.

No snow here, but very cold ;) even been wearing a fluffy fleece in bed  and fluffy socks. :becool: with purple, pink and raspberry stripes.

I have found some sewing patterns for a dress and shorts etc, in case we get a summer.

We will. It's always hard to remember, in January, what it's like to be too hot.

Last year I was doing the recycling on the coldest day of the year, and also the hottest - and I preferred the cold - at least you can warm up by keeping busy. Too hot, and I wilt.

I have been quite decadent recently and had the storage heater on, and the fan for instant foot heat. The storage heater just takes the edge off the mornings.

But the days are getting longer...

It's snowing gently here. I've got a long list of jobs to do before going back to work tomorrow (boo!) so it's quite relaxing being indoors watching it snow. Looks like I'll be taking the car to work tomorrow though:sad:.

I do wonder about the chap who lives opposite. My patio is icy, and when briefly outside to put some compost out, I got very cold very quickly.

He is outside cleaning his car. He has washed the wheels trims, with a small brush, dipped in a bucket, and no gloves on his hands. Now he has got the vacuum cleaner out. ;) The car is an 59 Reg which means it is only six months old, how did it get so dirty to need cleaning on a day as cooooollllddd as this?

I've put off washing my car as I'm afraid the water will get somewhere it shouldn't and freeze. And I being overly paranoid? Or is it just a handy excuse?

I think you are right. The water could go over the pavement and freeze tonight. His driveway slopes towards his house, so not a problem for him.

I would be worried about getting very cold and wet hands, and getting thoroughly chilled when not necessary. My washing machine is not working, and I have to wash everything by hand, which is not that difficult, except for the sheets, which my neighbour will very kindly do for me. But if I peg anything out, it will freeze before drying. ;)

Sounds very sensible!

I have a dozen little jobs I could get on with. I just bought a hi-vis vest in the poundshop, because it has a couple of metres of reflective tape sewn onto it, so I'm going to unpick it and sew or stick patches on stuff like my new winter gloves, which are all black.

And you know I was talking about a new rack pack last time we rode out? I've looked and looked and they all look a bit black and clunky, I can't find any with a nice colourscheme for a reasonable price (mine is black, but with a beige trim that suits the Galaxy - I was vaguely hoping Carradice did one in Barley, but they don't). I've come to the conclusion that I like mine best of all, and it's not so hard to take on and off after all, so I'm going to attack the blob of paint on the top with white spirit and see if it comes out. And sew a light loop on the back. Make-do and mend, eh?
