62% chance of snow in London today.;)

Morning all!

100% chance here. It's been snowing constantly since I got up and there's no end in sight.

Yes Sir! The Beaumont book arrived safe and well, thank you!
Not long after that I got both your postcards from Norway & Australia on the same day!

How's the trail going?
I've just been ambushed by the P*nct*r* F**ry, both tyre & inner tube slashed and non repairable.

Thankfully I have spares of both.
It was caused by a piece of bottle glass that someone had handily wrapped in a tissue and left in the road.;)

If I wasn't on ice scanning mode I might have viewd a tissue in the road as something to avoid.

Hi Speicher! How about trying Freecycle in your area? Sometimes people let their old one go when they buy new and the only thing wrong with them is the paint's chipped. Worth a try maybe: http://www.uk.freecycle.org/

Zippy, yes I have found Freecycle very useful in the past. But when it is a question of mixing water and electricity as it were, I would like to buy a new machine to be absolutely certain of being safe.

The old machine is about thrity years old. So it does not seem extravagant to buy a new, quiet, efficient one with short wash programmes etc.

I have in the past received from Freecycle, in excellent condition: one bent wood chair, like wot is in Ikea, a bread making machine, a magnifique  French dictionary, all in French, "Petit Robert" which is very expensive new, and a jigsaw holder, for when you are want to eat on the dining table.

I have also given away, lots of things, to numerous to mention. When the extension was being done, lots of stuff hung around in the garden to be collected (by arrangement) by Freecyclers, including 30 square of bubble wrap for someone's greenhouse, one spare window, one old sink, one wheelbarrow (useless here as the back garden is upstairs), and lots of other things, and about ten wooden pallets, (which someone was going to build a chicken shed from, and 200 plastic garden pots.

I suppose it helps being at the "junction" as it were of three Freecycle sites.

Night Train

I got up at 6.30 this morning to get ready for my class.
I had to dig out my car from under 10" of snow, clear the drive and path, dig out the neighbour's car as she was half out of the drive and stuck, cut off the fallen branches from a tree that was blocking the road and then I headed out.

I got to Burnley at 8.45 and prepared my class. Only 3 students turned up.
Then they closed the college at lunchtime!

I got home again with no problems but couldn't get back in my drive. Fortunately my neighbours were on their way back from shopping and helped push me back in.
It looked pretty here in daylight.

Very pretty here today - I decided not to ride in, and walked instead - the bike would have got all clogged up in the blizzard.

We worked as normal all day, with various people rushing to put their boxes out with exclamations of "we didn't think you'd make it today!".

We're like the Pony Express, we are, we always get through... We even had two offers of hot drinks (declined, we'd only just had a tea, and preferred to just get on).

Tea anyone? I'm putting the kettle on.

Oh, and the best bit, I nearly forgot. Turning the trike up a terraced side street to see, at the top, a vehicle wedged across the road, front wheels in the gutter, out of sight, rear wheels spinning helplessly on the packed snow just one side of the peak of the camber, trying to reverse to complete a 3 point turn.

We might have gone to help, but... if a 4x4 can't get itself out of a suburban gutter, it deserves to sit there. (although it would have been fun to offer to tow it out with a tricycle!) Anyway, we had work to get on with, and probably couldn't have done anything without laughing...

We'll shovel some snow for an old lady later in the week to make up for being bad.;)
