Hope everyone's ills and operations get sorted efficiently, and that you all have a healthy and Happy 2013.
Having said that I get my biopsy results on the 21st January! [completely forgot about that...]

I've heard you should feed a cold and starve a fever.... anyone got a cold they want rid of?

@wol - this is Rentokil's site but it seems that the default option is to involve them. I think I'd probably contact the local environmental health people at the council.

This is another site which goes into more details.

I think your pal probably needs to invite Potsy and his cats round for :cuppa:
Thank you @Wocky!

The rats are in my Mother's house. I do not know how long they have been there. I noticed an odd smell in the kitchen last Sunday, but assumed that it was the damp under the kitchen sink, and/or the silver fish seen in the cupboard under the sink.

The Pest Control Officer, from the Environmental Health department of the local Council, I assume, has visited today, and will be returning next week. What I am looking for also is details on their affects on people's health. The Rentokill website mentions allergic reactions. As my mother is 91 years old, extreme caution needs to be exercised regarding her health.

What symptoms are there if you have an allergic reation to rats?

I mentionned the silver fish in relation to my noticing the odd smell. I knew they were an indication of long-established damp. Her house was built in about 1950.

Hope it gets sorted, TVC

I would recommend getting an integrated BCD with weight pouches - then you won't have the strain of wearing a weight belt. I'd get you one for Christmas, but I don't know your size......but I bet Lullabelle does

I have one  Sadly though, it seems I have a very buoyant arse which means I can only hold 2kg in the BCD, the rest has to be further down to stop me swimming like a bottom feeder. And before you suggest, no, I'm not going to wear wankle weights.

Inflammation and constriction of the airways making it difficult to breathe. I know because I have it  At one stage Lullabelle had 19 pet rats, unfortunately I developed the allergy and she had to let them go, we were both gutted, I loved them, brilliant, curious, playful creatures.

It is likely that someone would be allergic to their droppings rather than the rats themselves. This would manifest itself like asthma with wheezing and sneezing - perhaps a rash, as well.

I do hope she is OK.
I get asthma, and it has been worse over the past few days since visiting my mother. Could I have an allergic reaction from being exposed to them and/or their droppings for such a short time? I was there for about four hours. Or is it just a coincidence with my earache, and sore throat?

When I was there on Sunday, I noticed a skip outside the house next door. The one she is "Semi-detached" to. In the skip were lots of large bits of what could have been floor boards etc. I expect they might have been disturbed from next door. The house opposite has also been "gutted" and refurbished, so the rats may have thought my Mother's house looked inviting.
