Evening all!

I'm shattered today, and hurt all over. Well, mainly my back and legs. There's a small part of one finger that feels ok. Went for a pint after work with colleagues, could only force myself to scramble eggs for tea. I don't think I'll be around online long, I'm going to retire to my bed with the telly on, as soon as I've wimped out of doing the minimal washing up.

Nice chooks, Waffles! So, with these not being ex-batts, will you be eating them later?:birthday:

Do you think the old girls will pick on them for being posh?

*chortle*

Actually, these birds, being Sussex. are dual purpose and I could rear them for meat. But that would mean no eggs, as they'd soon be ready for dispatch if I wanted tender meat. But as I want them for eggs, no, I won't be dispatching them, I'll be letting them live on and lay lots of lovely eggs. :girl:

I'm doing the standard procedure of introducing birds. The new birds are kept in a separate enclosure adjacent the resident birds. That way they can see each other, suss each other out, talk to each other, all without pecking each other to bits. This is done for a week then the new girls are put in with the resident girls. There'll be *a bit* of sorting out of pecking order, but this is entirely normal, and doing it this way minimizes the risk of serious blood being drawn on the first days together.

At the moment, the girls are all entirely laid back about the introductions. No major aggressive posturing and no noises as if WWIII has been declared. So far, so good.

Good to see the new hens waffles.

I went and did a few hours on the allotment yesterday after being released from lectures early. It was good to do something other than worry about the possibility of not being able to go back to college next year.

Decided to do the painstaking task of turning the soil over and picking out the weeds before they become established. I'm wonting all of the land turned over by the end of the week so I can put my onion sets in.

Arch I still surprised that my back still hurts after my stint at St Nicks, even when I do titration's or lift a bag of compost. Its still a little tender from digging yesterday.

Not enough room for hens unfortunately I only have half a plot. I'm hoping to be allowed to keep bees there if my neighbours and the allotment staff don't mind. Bee's take up less room.

I was going to have a pond to but have ditched that idea, will wait to see if I can get a full size plot at some point so I can do everything I want to with it.

I'd love to be able to keep bees. Not enough space as they'd be too close to houses. So I make do with encouraging bees by having a range of flowering plants, little wild spaces that aren't cultivated and a bumblebeehouse

Hurrah! First egg of the year! I think getting the new girls has prompted The Laydeez into action... the ex-batts are back in lay (well, one of them, anyhow. Nolo I think.

Funny you should mention cake, I just went to fetch some along with some milk for the office. The cake is to celebrate - there was definite clear dial between the needle and the 10 stone mark this morning (in the right direction!). So of course, I have cake to celebrate.

Tea up!
