I hope not. Today is my longer commute, so I'll burn it off. Ish.

The other thing I'm celebrating is that I just managed to stand up without going 'oooof!' and wincing.

How did you guess?

I'll be mugging you for that bluey-greeney bottle cage of yours. And have you got another one like it? No-one seems to sell them any more.

You're welcome, once I've swapped it off the trike (I was using it temporarily, but I've found another, and that colour really clashed with the flouro orange....)

Sadly, I don't have another, no. And I should warn you, it's a bit flimsy, so you have to watch you don't catch it on anything, it bends easily (but also, bends back!).

Changing the subject completely - I was watching EggHeads (BBC2) yesterday. The Challengers were a Team called the Wise Owls. And they won  - £37,000 :thumbsup: which they are going to donate to their Owl Sanctuary.:biggrin:

It is a much better programme when that TJ or TC is not in it. The "new" person is called Pat, and has the most wonderful Irish accent.

Who's a clever boy then!

Not sure I have any bike needs in green, of any shade! I'll whip that cage off at the weekend, anyway.

Hurrah! First egg of the year! I think getting the new girls has prompted The Laydeez into action... the ex-batts are back in lay (well, one of them, anyhow. Nolo I think.

I remember someone who kept thousands of hens telling me after their first moult egg production goes down, however after the first initial shock of the process they then start to produce more and larger eggs. Maybe that is what is happening to the laydeez?

Sort of...

A hen has an annual moult. This is often in the winter as egg laying is controlled by daylight hours/temperature. Low daylight hours = reduction/stoppage in laying & into a moult. Replacing feathers and egg-laying both require a lot of energy, so it's one or the other, if you see what I mean. As a bird ages, as a general rule she lays less eggs, but they tend to be larger eggs. Hens tend to lay the highest number of eggs in their first year of egg production. That's why battery hens are sent for slaughter at 12-18 months of age - they become uneconomic from a commercial farming POV. But from a 'backyard hen' POV, they are absolutely fine.
