I've got to take Nolo to the vet this evening. She's not a well hen. She laid a *huge* lash today & some smaller too. She has not eaten today - not even sweetcorn or mealworms have tempted her. I have a horrible feeling I may lose her. *sniff*

Nolo is dead. Got as far as the vet's waiting room. Two loud squawks, two convulsions and she was gone. Took less than ten seconds. The only positive I take form it is that her end was very quick.

Very sorry to hear that WC. As you say, at least it happened quickly. Does that mean you've lost both your original hens?

I've still got Anode from my original girls. Of the ex-batts I am left with Anode & Campag.

This could be entirely coincidence, but the two girls that died suddenly (albeit months apart) were the two girls with floppy combs, the less prolific layers and of the ex-batt pecking order, were down towards the bottom. In that when I got Anode & Cathode, Anode was top he of that pair. When I got Campag & Nolo, Campag was top hen of that pair.

On the plus side, the vet was distinctly unconcerned about the death, so nothing nasty to be passing along to others as far as I know. With ex-batts it can be 'one of those things' where they die relatively early - stresses of their early existance catching up, I suppose, their hearts can give up, they can have a stroke, their aortas can rupture...

Poor Nolo.

Poor Nolo indeed but it sounds as though it was relatively quick.

And thinking of the Lark Ascending, what better music could there be to commemorate a bird.

CM - I love that music, I can close my eyes and I'm lying on dry close sheep-cropped grass in a baking sun but a fresh breeze, high on a moor, or a down or somesuch. It's such a particular mental image.

Well, I've wolfed down my tea (scrambled eggs, beans on toast) and I'm off out to craft club in half an hour. Feel remarkably ok after 60 miles of torture riding in West Yorkshire and Lancashire yesterday...

Morning peeps. I am still left with four ravenous beaks. They are chomping down on their breakfast right now.

At a look on that Interwebbie thing and there actually is a condition in poultry called SDS: Sudden Death Syndrome - and it describes exactly what happened to Nolo in the vet's waiting room. So I'm fairly sure I know what it was that killed her, but not *why*

Ah - That's a nice brew. I'll wake up in a mo. Ah that's better - morning all.

N'other nice day out there. I'm planning a pedal after lunch. But first must fettle Mrs 26x25's new bike as relinquished by an 80 year old ex barrister for not to many squids. It's Olden days technology and is a little big for her (but fits me nicely  ) but was irresistibly good value for the asking price. Anyhoo I needs to fit a much reduced (quill) stem and possibly narrower bars. I have a 3" stem (see - olden days numbers too) which might be OK but I really could do with smaller. The saddle's been lowered and pushed forward so that'll help. She's dead keen to get out on it as it's much smoother and newer than her even oldener days techology she has been using.

One has to keep the enthusiasm levels up in the female parts of chez 26x25

I thought PorkyPete and 26times25 were mending bikes. Ha, they seem to have used all the mugs and not washed up.:tongue: Very good job that they did not know about the secret stash of biskits .....:ohmy: ..... oh ..... they did.
