Cross posted from YACF, but cute enough to share....

Just been talking to my sister...

At the weekend, they bought a sledge, in case they get decent snow.

Mum was going to go down for a couple of days, but eventually decided not to in the face of uncertain weather. Sis told Oli, Grandma might be coming, but might not be able to because of the snow.

"If it snows, she could come on a sledge"
"I don't think she has one, Oli"
"She could use ours!"
"Yes, but it's here, and she's there..."
"oh, yes...."

Later, walking to nursery...

"Could we walk to Grandma's?"
"Not really Oli, no."
"Is it because there aren't any pavements?"
"Well, sort of, there are some busy roads with no pavements, but it's also a very long way"
"Oh. Well, she'll just have to come here then."

Finally out of the workshop, washed, done ironing and time to settle down for a cuppa.

It's not easy jointing 5' long, 2 3/8" thick oak boards, this table top is going to be really heavy!

Would it not be easier to make it out of granite?
Probably weigh less as well...

Well, the client wants the coffee table to be 48" x 28" with a 2" thick top and three drawers underneath so you are probably right, granite would be lighter!

Not sure how I am going to deliver it yet, might be too heavy to lift into the back of the car and the trailer has a poorly tractor inside it.

Does the client live in a cottage with narrow corridors?

Fortunately not. The table will only be 18" high so it can be tipped on its edge and then straight in the front door into the front room.
I think the top will be a removable piece to save my back though.

I could just imagine the difficulty if the table top had to go round corners, with no space for manouevring something so heavy. Getting anything large into the lounge here can be tricky. Up the stairs and two right angled turns.

I can also imagine that you might visit your clients at home to discuss the design.

All the visiting and design development has been done with the client already. Their front door opens right into their front room so it is an easy installation.

I have done a 7'x3' dining table with a 2" thick top too, in the past. The whole table was made as a flat pack just for ease of making and installation.
