Excellent, it's still as smutty as ever in here  . I've been a bit quiet recently as I haven't got internet at home. Must nag the landlady.

Can I get anyone a Tea? Pancakes to follow this evening, except for those of you on a diet unless you've been out on the bike today  .

Does gardening count as exercise?

Not actual gardening, but sweeping the pato, riddling the compost, sowing seeds, more riddling compost, talking to the cat, deciding* what new plants might be needed to replace those killed off by temperatures of minus 20.

Then trying to get all the different sizes of pots into two tall piles, against a brick wall, and rescuing a creepy crawly thing from the compost. He was about an inch long with about twenty legs, and he was sort of pinky red in colour.

You can see that I have had an extremely busy afternoon, in the sunshine. :sun: That cold wind seems to have gone.

* That is me making the decision, just cat was just agreeing with me.

I have repaired numerous laptops and trimmed a bush in the garden............such excitement I cant stand it.

I want to go out on the bike but I have another job to go to at 4pm so I dont have enough time.

That's a shame Phil, I'll 'look after' your pancake for you

I have ridden 19 miles so can I have a pancake please?

Gardening is exercise I suppose, not sure about talking to the cat though, you can share Phil's with me seeing as he doesn't qualify either

Another nice day out there, though it was freezing again early morning, had to wear my Ski gloves to keep my little pinkies warm, roll on summer or at least slightly warmer temperatures

I was certainly in no fit state to do any bonking though, you must have a lot more stamina Arch

I suspect I would have been a fairly passive partner at that stage!

Coincidentally, Speicher, I was riddling compost today, well, leaf mould. The riddler, which is like a big Mouli-mill had a fixed knob (quiet please!) on the handle, which was annoying, as it meant a lot of friction as I turned it, making my hand very hot. Really ought to have revolved as the handle turned.

I'm off out for pancakes in an hour or so.

I just have a hand-held riddler. Some of the compost is nice and dry and riddles nicely, some is a bit wet. So there are now various bodged constructions of small tubs of compost draining into larger plant pots, the liquid that runs off is a lovely sludgey brown colour, and is tipped back on the garden.

I think I might get a second compost bin, it is surprising how much can be composted once you start.
It was a lovely afternoon to be pottering in the garden.

If I could find someone who can recycle black plastic food containers, and bottle tops other than milk bottle tops, I think I could give away my landfill bin.

Oooh - you are all getting ahead of me in the gardening stakes. When you riddle, Speicher, do you shake it all about? Or do you invent puzzles?

However, I too was in the sunny shiny garden this afternoon building a cold frame. I've been recycling wood from an old bed (or was it a sofa?) and I have some feather edge board I've been saving from an old shed I dismantled some years ago. So far it's costing nothing (except for some new screws) and a little bit of electricity to power my Black and Decker oh - and the porridge I've eaten. Oh yes the glass and frame are from our old secondary double glazing. I made a cold frame with these bits of glass before but time (20 years) has rotted the old structure.

The bad news is that I've run out of effort to bake any cup cakes

Anyone want this stale slice of bread? xx(

More Tea please

I have tried various strategies for riddling:

Shake it all about
Wobble from side to side
Gently shake in the vertical plane

I find it needs a combination of all three. I might try and do it in the style of Pilates.

Who knew that compost could be so fascinating?

I have also found that putting a larger green gardening bag inside a smaller strongerer rubble bag helps. The rubble bag maintains its shape, while I tip the riddled compost into widerer top of the green bag. The very finely riddled stuff will be used when I top up my Pots and plant some seeds. The seeds I scattered today are Delphiniums and were scattered in the places with plenty of sun, and not too much wind.

I suppose instead of buying a second green compost bin, I could make a sort of box of mesh. Do you know how to find out how to do this, and what recycled items I need to look out for. Various items of timber, including 2 by 2 is donated to the same place I do my Librarian duties, and might cost the princely sum of twenty pence each. How big a mesh do I need? Of course the one plant that is where I would ideally put this second bin, is one of the ones that did not get killed off in the winter. It is a big plant, so would not easily move, I think. But the border is deeper there so I would not be squashing grass in front of the bin, and it is not visible from the house (hidden behind a very large tree). Decisions, decisions.

Ah Ha. The riddle is solved  I think we need a video tho'. I was just wondering if your riddle action is anything like panning for gold? And would you stand in this cold Welsh river and demonstrate please? I'll deal with the leftovers

Ah now compost bins. I grab some pallets (for free wherever I can) and arrange those to make an enclosure which I gradually fill with stuff. About once a year I will dig it out and restack it in a second bin to give it a good mixing. It's then ready to use in a few months. Oh - and I use processed and recycled Tea on it too  I have three such pallett compost bins :becool:
