The answer you were clutching for is the word "pent", meaning "on top". Penthouse, and pentice board. I have been fitting pentice boards all over my house today, in preparation for rendering, hopefully next week. Here's a pentice board, then the whole window surround with pentice board and architraves:

It was clearing the pile of oak that did my back. I have 3 pieces left over (it's a long and boring story), and I took them to the dry overhang behind my workshop. My back gave up in protest at the last one I moved.
