Have you tried telling your whitebeam it's winter. They reckon talking to plants is good for them.

A crazy thing to do when you think about it plus you always had some old busybody out throwing salt on it.

Last time we did it, we banned the use of coats & plastic sheets. Along came someone who knew better, ended up hitting a kerb at close on 20mph before continuing on for a further 100 yards.
Broke his legs when he cracked the kerbstone, in his attempt to stop.
We used those, just the nearby mill always had heavy plastic sheets being thrown out. Which is why we used the plastic sheets.We used metal trays.
I remember more than a few breaks mostly through general daftness
