Speedy recovery Kipster!

Just reflecting on the meaning of life.

mightily miffed today, enjoying a cracking velodrome session when I found myself behind the numpty of the group. He managed to clip the rider in front of him, fell of in front of me at just about the steepest part. I hit him or his bike as its directly in front of me, over the bars and land on my left shoulder. X-rays confirm a broken collarbone, Mallorca is three weeks away, arrrggghhh. The drive home was none too easy either. At least I can spin the legs up on the turbo, but I won't be competing or doing any routes that require me to change up or down on the front.

Just the collarbone. The break is near the joint with the shoulder, and only a single break. The X-ray shows that the bones are quite aligned so I'm hoping it's a quick recovery. I've got to go to the fracture clinic on Monday as the triage nurses hadn't see a break at the same point before so couldn't advise. The good news is that at least two of the fracture clinic consultants are cyclists, one with the cycling club, the other is the North hants rider that's entered your local gran fondo @LBHIFI

I hope to be on the turbo in a week or so, even if it's just spinning the legs.

I feel for you, Kipster.

Bust my collarbone a few years back - a double-displaced fracture. I was riding down from Farleigh Wallop to Cliddesden, doing about 38mph (Garmin went from 38 to 0mph very quickly) when I suffered uncontrollable wheel wobble. Headed for the softer verge rather than lose it on the tarmac. Ended up with a more than slightly modified bike & helmet into the bargain!

Didn't have the BKOOL then and couldn't bear getting on the normal turbo.

I was offered a surgical repair but no real benefit apart from a straighter collarbone and some added metalwork, so I didn't bother.

The pros can get back on the bike, admittedly after surgery, in about a week so I'm sure you will be fine. Not so sure that hauling yourself up Sa Calobra will be a good idea, though.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

You guys are right of course. And there's no way I can go any faster.

Oh but hang on! Doesn't our handicap change with each ride, both up or down ?

Not normally up, unless the faster time had some unusual circumstance.

I think after another three runs, the faster time could drop out of the calculation.

Geoff

I think it depends on how well/badly I do

 I went out in the real world today... I'll tell you something for nothing my brethren, don't bother! It's full of cars, wind, horse poo, puddles and pot holes. Keep away from the light there's nothing out there for you.

I couldn't agree more Ramirez. I went up Col du Glandon today and only had to deal with a little bit of sweat and a small amount of tyre particle shedding.:bicycle:

All you need is a bit of imagination and you can be happy.

And the bike feels really weird to start with when the wheels can move laterally.
It was a tad weird, especially when I stopped to make a turn and I just fell over as I'd forgotten to unclip, luckily there was only a small car driving up behind me, if it had been something bigger (Chelsea Tractor or similar) they probably wouldn't have seen me and squished my head. :cycle:

Isn't that what a track stand is for? I've never been able to find one in my LBS or on the web. Even ebay doesn't have them :cursing:. Rarer than rocking horse poo.
