Respect to a brave effort then for such a young rider!
However, his team have since provided the following update and it’s unclear as to whether he will be in a position to start tomorrow’s stage.
MEDICAL UPDATE @s_kruijswijk has a small rib fracture and is struggling with pains in his foot and side. New update, tomorrow morning.

Although Froome lost a shed load of time in the Vuelta last year after his spill it was worth it to see Tinkov eat his words!
He has been declared fit . :bicycle:with a rib injury is going to be hard :headshake::notworthy:

I have just received the dreaded email indicating I have been beaten by AAAC on the bonus sprint 1

I suppose it was to be expected and unrealistic of me to think I would have a faster time

Believe me it was not easy!
My plan was not to fly off the line rather push hard into the hill and catch you by the top of the first steep bit and then get a tow until the final slower rise and then attack the rest of the stage try and take 23 seconds or more from you and thus best Bill.
Well I didn't even catch you on the first steep rise and then had to work very hard on the false flat to catch you before the descent.
I managed that but was spent by the descent so again it was another power off descent to recover and then smash the last bit with all I had left.
Nett result was 2 seconds short on Bill's time.
I should have Pro slinged the start and a) I would have made up those 2 seconds and b) I could have caught you earlier and used your draft.
I'm not doing it again, I am not suited to these very short blasts, I probably don't have enough if the twitch muscles whatever they are that sprinters need rather I was born a diesel.

If you are watching its good to see the only Dane is a support rider for Nibali but still lies 11th in the GC at 18:41, FUGLSANG Jakob (Lars)
Yes, but he has not been up to his best, and has not been of much help to Nibali. Scarponi was the superior helper this time.

Is there a rerun of the chaingang today? I find myself with a semi-free afternoon...

I was there at 17:00 but no one turned up so I killed myself on the Bonus Sprint and then warmed down for 36 km in the velodrome (average 43 kph). I was just going to bimble around for 10 minutes but just got drawn in, you can get some good speed up on the boards for a lot less power than on the road stages so you get a real feel good factor. If there are plenty of people on the circuit you get a lot of drafting as well even if you are going past folk.
