Not so fast AAAC. I don't mean that literally as I'd rather move up to your pace than you slow to mine. Anyway I may be getting long in the tooth but I now have a new rear tyre (stolen off the front) so am ready to do battle.
I may not beat you this time but I will beat you again. :cycle:

Blimey you lot are so chatty. Takes me ages to catch up if I miss a couple of days. Fully intend to have a crack at the Chaingang run today, but away this afternoon so will have to be earlier than the rerun.

My excuses are coming straight out of the bobinski hand book today.

Bob is there any chance you can find the thread you mentioned on Bikeradar regarding knee pain? My left knee is very sore and Its not really improving.

 Cheers mate. Can't make any promises on the pee taking I'm afraid. Leopards, spots, and all that...

I'm not sure I have ITB. The pain is coming from just below my kneecap. I'm hoping it's just the result of pushing too hard last weekend but I'd rather be safe than sorry . That thread raises something else I've wondered about in the past too, in that I think lots of people are using pedal spindles that aren't best suited to their hip width. I'm sure in my pedal motion my legs pull in slightly as I push down to compensate for the length of my spindles and that sideways motion can't be to good on the knees can it?. Now I'm not saying I've got child bearing hips here, before you lot jump all over it! But it is odd isn't it that we all choose bikes specific to our proportions, frame size, stem length, saddle height etc etc. But all ride one length of spindle in the main.

Just looked up ITB, sounds quite painful! I read its to do with weak glutes, I have never suffered with weak glutes due to squatting, and the wife says I talk out of my arse alot. I used to have sore knees for years from lack of exercise, but thankfully cleared up once I took up riding and I will not kneel down unless on padded matting

I use speed plays and have a slightly longer right spindle to try and keep my knee tracking straight.

Bob have you tried adding a few washers between the crank arm and pedal shaft to move the pedal further out? Might be worth a try to see if relief comes from it. It can be just a few mm that makes all the difference.

Tommy, have you been grinding the pedals or something to aggravate the knee?

It is!
I have been doing my glute exercises this morning, stretched, applied ice pack and now ibuprofen. I cannot bend the knee sufficiently to squat. I am now warming up in Zwift and there is soreness at front of knee, just to right and then into joint that will ease as long as I warm up properly and then it's fine to pedal. It only rarely affects riding on turbo because I can control pedal motion more than out in real world where sudden stops and unclipping can cause inflammation and pain.
Peeing down in London but it's sunny in Zwift.
