I was wondering if anyone else on here has gone through what I went through on Monday evening,
after setting up for a 10 mile time trial course which I videoed and uploaded to BKool, I had a drink of
water, got on my bike and did a 10 minute warm up, same kind of warm up as I normally do with a
bit more intensity between the 5 minute down to 2 minute mark then easing slightly and holding a
steady intensity til the countdown, I then started the time trial which was as fast as I could from the start
THEN after just under 2 miles my head felt like it exploded inside, I had to ease off really quickly and
slowed down to lower my heart rate before climbing off my bike with a really bad headache which lasted
for a couple of hours, I felt shaky and quite scared, I later took some painkillers which eased it, checked
my blood pressure which was higher than normal and rested til I went to bed, next morning I woke up
with a very slight headache, blood pressure was back to normal and as the day went on I felt a lot better,
today (Wednesday) Im still not 100% but feeling much better I googled "headache while exercising" and
it seems like I had whats known as an exertion headache, Im now ok but according to the websites
advice is to not train for a week, then gradually ease yourself back into training, sorry this is such a long
post but I was curious if anyone else has experienced this as its the first time this has happened to me
and I am used to doing high intensity workouts on the the turbo.

Scary, but thankfully it sounds like it was nothing serious.

I feel a bit awkward saying too much here, as I don't want to pi$$ on anyone's fireworks, so please take what I say with a pinch of salt...

Anyone past the first flush of youth should be aware that exercising at very high heart rates and to the point of exhaustion is not without risk! Chances are you will be fine, but heart attacks and strokes do happen to fit people, and flat out exercise and high heart rates raise blood pressure and stresses the cardio vascular system.

I would say that 10 minutes is not enough of a warm up before going flat out.

I have been advised by various Stroke consultants that blood pressure rises when you start to exercise, but then falls again when you have warmed up properly and your blood vessels have fully dilated, as they can carry a greater volume of blood at a lower pressure. I know from riding on the road that hitting a real steep climb after an hour feels easier than doing it in the first 30 minutes, when it can really hurt. From this I presume that muscles and circulation take much longer to reach full effectiveness than 10 minutes.

As CXRAndy says, if it happens again see a GP, or preferably go to A&E as only a head scan will really show if anything untoward has happened!

All the best,

Geoff

Thanks soarer and goldwolfie for the encouragement
Kind of enjoyed that and i normal shy away from climbs with it being live seamed to help me hang in there . ive got no chance of doing the devil staircase unless i keep at the climbs
Is this likely to be a regular thing
Hey Rob, are you thinking of doing the Double Devil?

It 1 of the ride i would like to do but it would be a bit too much for me so hopefully by next year i will have improved enough to tackle it
Bill and I entered the first one, last year, the weather was atrocious. Bill nailed it like a hero, but it cost him. His fingers were hurting for months. I came off and skidded down a hill on my ass, so all in all, a memorable experience. But just beautiful scenery, if the weather permits you a good view of it. The Devils Staircase itself barks a lot more than it bites. It's brutal, but very short lived.
You could always do the 90 mile version, which cuts out the Devils Elbow, but still includes the Staircase.
I haven't ruled out doing the shorter one myself yet.

Not so long ago, I was smugly admitting to Soarer that I felt surprisingly ok after that Goat run. Turns out that was because I was sitting down.
Cut a long story short, the wife has thrown me down a blanket, and I'm sleeping at the foot of the stairs!
That's the trouble with being tall, there is a long way for the message to travel from your legs to your brain to tell you they are hurting so it takes a while.

I find I need 20 mins warm up, I start fully dressed with no fan running and build up cadence and power for 10 mins then cruise back down for remaining 10 mins. By then I have a mild sweat. Strip off (Oo'er), fan on and wait last minute for start

My warm up routine involves trying to get my daughter upstairs as quick as poss so I don't miss the start time... It always seems to be a bit of a flap.

Do you guys do any stretching or just spin up?

I just spin up I try and do a 20 minute ride in the velodrome at a easy pace then join the warm up for the race which allows me to keep the legs spinning.

That's if I have enough time.
