I would think its no4.....general rules don't apply to individuals very well. The go as hard as you can gauge is often good, but beware of 'the rules' no 6......# free your mind and your legs will follow #.

Its time to tame the chimp.... Steve Peters book is a good read. The chimp persona.

Re blowing up....well a short term over exertion due to lactic and waste product build up is a million miles away from a proper 'bonk' due to low blood sugar as experienced on a longer ride. You will never know your limit if you don't find it and got through it. HRMs are not that helpful from that perspective as you tend to ride to what you think your limit is.
I think there's a lot of truth in what you say. I have, for some time now, eased up around the 165-170, even if only subconsciously. Strangely after all the chat about HRM yesterday I only looked at my HR on the screen twice. I am glad I did not look near the end coz it would have been ugly.

Ill try and up the watts by 5-10 for the next time round and see if I can hold it. Tommy, we are quite evenly matched at the moment, yes I do use you as a target to catch upto! Not quite had it in me yet to break your spirit in the late stages of a session

I think that's the thing

If you take your heart rate on its own it can be quite misleading as a few different variables can effect it. Time of day, food and drink intake etc etc. I think the general consensus is power, or power + heart rate is a far better indicator.

Having said all that I want to get the hrm set up. Mainly just for the comedy of seeing how potty my heart rate goes!

Correct. Power is power whether you are rested/ill/tired......HR fluctuates quite a bit. Its useful to see some HR number to relate to how you physically feel. In my case last night its was 30 minutes of torture, slowly numbing right arm, tunnel vision, gasping breaths and a fairly steady 162-165 bpm. Couldn't hold the power around the required 320w. Ok for 15mins, then tailed off.....discipline went with it & rocking around like a teddy boy on speed. I have been fighting off the squits for a week - thinks its taking its toll.

I wouldn't mind the squits at the moment. Whenever I take pain killers for my knee they have the opposite effect to what you are experiencing. The minutes before and after a chaingang race can be quite interesting though as nerves take hold and then adrenalin or whatever come into play:blush:

Agreed TT. I have a Fitbit and so can measure resting heart rate when I wake. Normally 47/49 but anything over mid 50s and I know I won't ride so well.

You may have noticed that I do not take life too seriously. Never have and hopefully never will but this I do mean sincerely, very well done.

The camaraderie on here is fantastic the racing against other people is great fun made in my opinion even more fun by the handicap races but ultimately you are only racing one person and yesterday you beat him.

That ftp score shows that you are getting stronger and fitter and the hours of slogging away on a turbo are potentially adding years into your life.

Where you finish compared to everyone else matters little but the work you have done there is very impressive. Well done.

I work on the basis that I try and keep at about 170 - 175 for most of the turbo rides, unless it's a a 50km one, then I adjust downwards a bit (165-170), it leaves me the option that i've left enough to push in the last mile and get it up to 185-192, then I know I was trying, regardless of the position. Just checked the auto calculated HR zones on bkool and it has zone 6 and 198, well I dont think that is going to happen. I keep meaning to ignore it and work on power only and either leave the HR strap off or put tape over that part of the screen so I cant see it.

On a half hour climb like this, I pretty much disregard pacing myself, I kind of just give it everything for nearly all of the ride. Might just ease up for a second for a drink or a draft, but then charge off again.
That was the highest I've had my HR, and it felt like it too.
It is pure competitive nature that drives me. If I am a minute or so ahead and behind people, I tend to zone out and ease up. But when I see that glimmer of opportunity like I did with Bridgy last night, I will die trying.

I can totally believe that of you mate.

From the time I've started training on here I've seen you consistently attack the people ahead of you on the road to the point where you're now right amongst it! I've got a lot of respect for that.

From my perspective, the likes of you, kipster and bridgy etc are a decent chunk of time ahead of me on the road. With Bill, bob, Rick etc a small margin still further away.

I love coming on here for a laugh and a joke, the amount of times I laugh out loud reading the nonesense on here is rediculous.

But ultimately I want to push myself as hard as possible, I want techno coloured canary for breakfast god dammit!! And to do that I think I have to analyse my effort a little bit. Not enough where it gets boring, but enough to try and stay ahead of you b@stards!!!

I think I have recovered sufficiently to comment on last night, mainly to say that I will not be trying like that again for fear it will be the end of me.

At my age my theoretical maximum HR is 152, I averaged 153 with 167 maximum and spent a couple of hours after the ride feeling distincly unwell.

I'm a leisure cyclist and have never done anything competetive on the bike, I fear that last night the old competetive intstincts from my football and athletics days got the better of me. I'll be reining myself back in future.
