I've put together Novembers Handicap League, more qualifying for the Team Time Trials until we get the numbers nearer 16-20.

I've added the 2016 Banff GranFondo S3 stage from last months Chain Gang, as it seemed a suitable course and length; we start with that tomorrow.

I have taken the times from the Chain Gang to get initial Handicaps, and had to approximate for anyone who missed that stage. If anyone else wants to join in or point me at a time for the stage please let me know.

So here are the initial Handicaps, subject to adjustment between now and tomorrow!

Sorry guys but I am going to have to miss the live ride tomorrow due to late work meeting. I'll complete it in the week on my own

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it to tonight's Team Time Trial handicap race. Sorry to anyone who was thinking of drafting with me to catch Bridgy. (Bob, LB) That was going to be my plan and I think we could have got the better of him. Could be a disadvantage to start a bit earlier than the group.
I like your thinking @gbrown ;)

Has anyone used TrainerRoad for specific training? Looking at Zwift(blog) and with comments from Bob, I don't think Zwift is for me.

I did Andy for about a year in tandem with sufferfest. But with a dumb trainer. I couldn't do it without the sufferfest vids though. I am not one to look at a graph alone. I think using TR had a huge impact on my fitness though difficult to quantify because i would also go out for long rides at the weekend.

Thanks Bob, I was looking at using TR for something more structured which is geared towards lifting my FTP for next years TT season. I see it also has planning for century rides(useful), but I was going to get my distance miles from club runs in early spring upto May's Welsh adventure.:becool:

I must point out that Bkool's Cyclechat Chaingang leagues have increased my fitness considerably and aren't looking to drop out, I enjoy tremendously the banter from this forum.:hello: Thanks Admin^_^

The next Handicap Chase is 2016 Banff GranFondo S3

Next run is 8pm (plus Start Time) this Tuesday 1st November 2016.

Start Times (Handicaps) are as follows... (when underway time equals or exceeds the given Start Time).

If anyone else wants to take part, can they let us know a competitive time for the stage, or failing that their fitness level and who they usually finish close to.

Your handicap is based on your previous times, and is used to generate a Start Time.

Like golf, the higher the Handicap the more assistance you get, so the earlier the Start Time.

Your Handicap is reduced slightly if you have only completed one chase, and reduced more if you have completed none (and your time is based on doing the stage outside the handicap format). Therefore you are rewarded for completing the handicap chase once, and rewarded more for a second one, as your time should more closely reflect your current potential.

Finally, the Handicap is also reduced slightly for those who are furthest behind the fastest time, as they have more chance of significantly improving their times. The front runners will always struggle to improve their times much, especially after a couple of runs, so they need the full Handicap to stay competitive.

This algorithm has developed across several stages (and previous Chain Gang rides) and closed the bulk of the field from around 10 minutes to around 3 minutes, and hopefully future runs will close it up again slightly.

It is always likely that the win will be taken by an early starter who improves significantly, which is probably a good thing as it improves motivation. It is also possible that any significant under performance on previous bests will result in trailing in at the back, for even the fastest riders. I don't think this can be helped. However, so long as the bulk of the entrants finish close together it should make for a more entertaining session for the majority, and make the format worthwhile.

Geoff

Afternoon Geoff,

8pm is too late for me tonight, can I do this alone before the 8pm start or do I have to wait until its run and then do it?

Cheers

I am sure they have. The risk is there are so many races to ride and at a certain level that some of us may miss out on recovery time. That is where a structured training plan comes in but we all know that-the problem is resisting the temptation to ride and race!
