Monte pointed out he said his wheel speed sensor was registering a higher speed than Bkool(blue numbers) was whilst climbing. So that would lead to the assumption Bkool used the wrong resistance or the calculation for speed is wrong or both

Would it not suggest that Bkool is doing what Tacx say the Vortex does in the following?

Trainer 2.jpg

i.e blue numbers uphill = the Bkool Pro has reached max resistance for the rider weight and power, and is artificially reducing speed to compensate? This would match what Monte's seeing with his speed sensor saying he's going faster than the blue numbers.

Isn't this what you would expect? Since the simulator knows that the resistance is not sufficient at that speed on that gradient of climb, it knows that the speed is too high, so estimates a lower speed it thinks would be achieved if the resistance was high enough and displays that in blue?

This is what you would want it to do, to keep things realistic and a level playing field with other riders/trainers, but whether the estimated speed is accurate or not is another questions!

We just bought a new kitchen, 20 odd units, flooring, solid wood worktops, 2 sinks, taps, lights, pan draw that HID needed! pull down cupboards etc and only paid 8k. All from Howdens. You need to know a builder as they only deal with the trade but worth a visit.
20 units  i would need to build an extension on the extension !

Thanks Geoff. I found a couple of other bits of info from Wahoo and Tacx on their trainers and the max incline related to rider weight. The first image is a graph showing the Vortex can only replicate its claimed 7% slope for a total of 75kg for rider plus bike. Unfortunately I can't find a link to the actual calculator itself any more. I also can't find any info like this for the Bkool trainers which apparently aren't constrained by rider weight at all...

Very interesting, thanks!

If the 75Kg includes the bike, the rider at 68 Kg (10 stone 9.6) is quite light, if average weights on here are anything to go by.

So if you want to simulate any sort of climbs, above a gentle rolling terrain, the Vortex is pretty much useless, the Bkool Pro is just about OK (if you are not too heavy) and a £1,000 trainer is what is needed for anyone but the lightest of riders if they really want to train on mountains!

EDIT: I'd really love to get down to below 70Kg (11 stone), that's always been my target but around 73Kg is the best I've ever achieved. Something always stops me exercising and the weight slowly climbs back again.

I agree Geoff/Paul. So going back to Rick‘s comments on Facebook and him being banned for highlighting the real life experience with the bkool Pro.

Yes - but I think the trainer manufacturers should be much more open about what they're basing their claims on so people can make informed decisions

Outrageous really, but these things are marketing outlets and you would expect them to moderate them tightly.

Unless regulated, competition will always push marketing towards borderlines, whatever they can get away with, basically, because if they don't their competition will and put them out of business! It's a shame, but the way the world works!

Constant Cynicism is the best defence... :headshake:

@TurboTommy What happened to you last night? Looked like you got a puncture and tried to limp to the end.
As for me, I killed myself trying to catch and then stay with Bridgy as far as the first hill.

I did wonder, as Tommy was doing so well for most of the ride, and thought you and Bridgy would draft up to Bob!

Next ride of Banff you'll get a headstart on Bridgy, and he'll weigh more!

Not really enough riders for a Team Time Trial league yet, especially thin on Team White and Green, so we'll have to have another month of qualifying. Perhaps after Christmas we'll have enough people with time to get some teams going?

Plenty of competition for Team Blue and Red! :hyper:
