Heads up guys.
Just hung up on an Asian IT imposter. He called under the guise he was from my internet provider's IT department and had noticed poor internet speed caused by a virus.
First alarm bell, no mention of Talk Talk.

He then tried to direct me to download a programme to rectify the speed. While he was pushing his so called advice, I was Googling 'team viewer scam', team viewer being the name of the web site I was directed to.

Yep I was right, big fat scam

yup, a good program for remote access. used by scammers to get access to your system. the program itself is NOT a bad thing

As above, Team Viewer its self is a legitimate and useful application for sharing your desktop, but only with people you know and trust! They'll ask you to download Team Viewer so they can get into your PC and change settings and download software, then offering to undo this for your credit card details.

I've had these people ring a couple of times, but as soon as I agree to take part they hang up, not sure what I do that hints I am just having them on.

I have a client who was having problems with their internet connection and she got the exact same phone call and they scammed her out of £170, they are with tiscali so another words TalkTalk also. She has said that they had access to her account number also so she thought they were genuine until she got a call from her banks fraud dept, so it looks like these calls are doing the rounds.

So I introduced my self as Captain Smyth - Jenkins of Military intelligence, and asked if he was aware that he was stating he had accessed a military computer and was therefore in breach of the Official Secrets act.. ... and the call was being traced at which point the phone went quiet, apart from a conversation with someone in the background.
They then hung up

It's thanks to Team Viewer that I can remotely log on to my Dad's computer to fix his problems when they arrise, but he is under strict instructions not to allow anyone else other than me to do this.

When I asked them to name the virus, they changed their 'tune' and told me it was hacking software instead... so I asked for the exact filename... They then told me I could look on any of the computers in the household... I did tactfully point out at this point that I would need to look on the infected machine not any other machine in the house and asked him how many computers he thought the household had... needless to say the call didn't get very far... we only have the one computer and it wasn't even connected to the internet at the time because my internet was down!

I try to keep them on the line as long as possible, making out that im trying to do as they ask but cant. Then say...

"Computer? Did you say computer? I have been trying this on a calculator!"

Then try again... but this time im on a typewriter...

Teamviewer is an excellent tool, but can be used by the naughty mob.

A friend of mine was caught like that. She handed over control to the 'technician' who eventually asked for money. She finally realised that something was not right and hung up the phone, but by that time he had already changed the passwords and locked her out of the machine!
