Why are there so many gear shifts in this car chase? There does seem to be a fair bit of double clutching going on. For a start, I thought most American cars of the time were automatics (although at one point the Mafia hood can be seen changing gear). In second place, they appear to change gear while not actually speeding up or slowing down or changing gradient very much.

Long while back, Terminator 2; the little motocross bike must have had at least 10 gears..

They pressume most people haven't got a clue about the mechanics..

It disturbs the verisimilitude of the scene.

That Land Rover one's not too far from the truth, with a Series box (it was in my old 2A)
My mate had a Mk1 Cortina with a column shift. The selectors had worn so much that the gear you engaged was completely random and only he could manage it out of sheer familiarity. We left a pub one night and found the car about fifty yards from where he'd parked it, the scrotes who tried to nick it had got it started then given up and just walked away.

My missus's Metro (circa 1990) could engage 2nd and reverse at the same time. Took it to the dealership...."OK, £750 for a new gearbox, and £fekkingsillymoney for labour." Took it to a local Mini specialist (same K series engine and gearbox as later BL minis) who knew exactly what the problem was. Gearbox removal and strip £50...new part (brass bushing that held the reverse gear on the lay shaft)...50p....

I think Minis were all A series, weren't they? The K series went into the Metro about '93 IIRC.
Gear shift on our old 5 speed Uno was terrible - like stirring lumpy porridge. The linkages were very sloppy, and lots of them!

Maybe, but I'm sure they shared the shitty gearbox. What I do know is that a mini specialist fixed the gearbox in 4 hours - BL had decided to use a brass shim at the front and the rear of each gear instead of a full length brass collar for each gear, and they slipped and slided for lots of people!

I do remember though, that it was amazeballs in the snow! It was so under powered that you couldn't wheel spin and the wheels were super skinny so they just dug in.
