My avatar is intentionally enigmatic. The message it's supposed to convey is "don't judge a book by its cover/not everything is what it seems". In retrospect, I'm thinking what planet was I on.
The image is of a New Zealand cricketer from the 1960s, Gary Bartlett. Was he a hero? Villian? Victim? Regular guy? It's far from clear, and a case could be made for any of those. I think it's time for a change.
My username refers to the Col des Aravis, as you might have guessed. Of the classic Alpine cols it's perhaps the most accessible, a kind of everyman's classic. I wouldn't have been so pretentious as to call myself Izoard or Stelvio. More particularly, in 1985 it was the scene of the single most dramatic moment of my life in cycling, a story I will tell on this forum sometime.
