My experience was that they did know, they usually made a comment when the ad break was going to start for those on Eurosport, and then said welcome back to them at the end of the ad break.
Yes - sometimes on the major races
the less major one - even some well known ones - I got the impression that they knew about the GCN stuff
but Eurosport lobbed a few more in and they didn;t tell the commentators
