if you're going to sack someone it's as well to have some idea who you would like to replace that person.

I hope you don't mind if I disagree with you there.

2 reasons really; generally speaking, they're different decisions. Whilst one will necessarily follow the other, they should not influence each other. That is, whether Terry should be sacked or not is one decision to be taken on it's own. That there may be no suitable replacement ought be irrelevant, it does not change what Terry has or hasn't done.

Secondly, and more specifically, I'm not sure it should be left to the FA to decide who is captain. I'd doubt whether some of them even know who's in the team!

It won't be, that's the managers decision.

I believe Terry had to go especially as half the squad weren't talking to him. I agree with Smoking Joe in that the captain is simply a tosser.

The players that shout, organise and inspire, do that whether they wear an armband or not in my experience.

tch, tch.

So, Ferdinand doesn't want the job, Gerrard has only made eight starts this season and didn't exactly inspire in South Africa. Rooney is suspended for the first part of the tournament, Scott Parker is on the periphery of the squad, Cole.......'nuff said, Lampard may not play, Gareth Barry, Joleon Lescott.......oh, dear.

Is this it? Is this all that all the teams in England have to offer? Is there no player not even down in the Championship that commands respect from his teammates?

Seriously Dell, if that's it we should jack it in as an international team. As I've said before, everyone involved in the SA World Cup should have the decency to retire from international football and as a Liverpool fan I include Gerrard and Johnson.

Well, by dint of the clearly demonstrated lack of credible alternatives, we are left with only one outstanding contender for the captaincy.............

Actually, having just watched MotD and Arsenal's demolition of Blackburn, let's cut out the middle-man and make Oxlade-Chamberlain captain.

Contrary to Smokin' Joe's contribution, captains can and sometimes do make a difference, particularly in defence, which is why I don't think Darren Bent will get the gig.
I disagree, being an England football captain is mainly a token position, strategy (unlike cricket for example) is decided by the manager. The captain talks to the media before games, thats about it.

These are meant to be the best of the best, all are usually capable of being a captain and shouldn't need telling how to do their jobs or being inspired to play for their country, if they do they probably shouldn't be there.

A captain CAN make a difference but so can any other player.

Bearing in mind the only captaincy duty to be performed on the pitch is calling heads or tails when the referee tosses the coin I don't really see what all the fuss is about.
An England captain is different though. He must essentially be a centre half because they are usually big. He must go for diving header clearances when the ball is just a foot above the ground and could simply be kicked or shock horror, controlled and passed. He must throw himself about like a madman and preferably sustain some kind of head injury that draws blood. He must swear and gesticulate a lot to show how passionate he is about representing his country. He must perform lots of reckless sliding tackles to show his commitment and receive yellow cards from the ref because he's the hard man. He must lead by example...great in the air, shoot on the deck and above all be a big loser when it counts be it a penalty taker in a champions league final or a bag of shite in the world cup finals.
