I'm with the agency bloke on this one... Even if the bikes aren't up to much, one would still bring a smile to the face of some poor, impoverished kiddie at Christmas.

Probably some accountant said "well, we can't sell them, the bits to fix them up would cost more than they are worth, bin them". No thought about maybe doing a bit of good, and a nice bit of PR; just the P&L account.

Mind you, compared to the millions of tons of perfectly good food which supermarkets see fit to send to landfill when there's millions of people starving, I suppose this is a drop in the ocean.

I honestly think the human race is set to exterminate itself, very soon.
When I started my first job and bough a flat I also got a part time job in a supermarket to pay the solicitor's fee.
I opted for the bakery dept. thinking I would get to take some unsold cakes home after store closed :hungry:. (Good plan I thought).
I was, however given the sickening job of chucking anything unsold into the skip.
There was a homeless shelter right next door and I asked why they didn't donate instead, was told anything binned is claimed back so don't give anything away or sell cheap .
Left as soon as solicitor paid and I now confess I did do much secret munching :hello::hungry:.

Tesco have an outlet store on eBay where these BSO's regularly turn up, occasionally as cheap as £30. Presumably they are just customer returns / old stock, but at that price they might be worth a look?

Oh, and on the subject of Tesco waste, try this article: http://www.theguardian.com/business...bagged-salad-and-half-its-bread-is-thrown-out

A bit of balance, my daughter has a Tesco "Vesuvius" and has had for a number of years. The bike has never fallen apart or broken. She has had a lot of fun on it, it cost £50. Sure it hasn't got high level gearing, but everything else is ok, brakes work, suspension works, it's fine as a kids bike!

She's growing a bit big for it now (she's now 9) so we will look for something bigger soon.

Those supermarket cheapos have a life of about 75 miles before the consumables (bearings, drive train) are worn out. Probably further than most kids manage as they are only used round their estates for a year or so.
Don't agree, see my post ^^^^
This ones been round center parcs a few times, High lodge forest trail centre in Thetford and many other rides over the years.

Did she get the trainers to match the bike, or vice-versa?

A tesco spokesman didnt say ...
"Those were from a batch with a manufactiing defect. Its impossible to fix forks or handlebars being on backwards. Also, there had been comments on some internet forums suggesting that the chains were slack. Therefore, these are Satans work and will be blessed with holy water before being burned".

People would have enough to complain about (and rightly so) if they purchased one of these bikes and something went wrong with it, or unhappy about their bike in some way. Think of it as a problem prevented.
