I found a pack of this in the larder.. I asked 'er indoors why she bought it when we have plenty of normal rice.. her reply... "Thought it would be easier to cook"

I grimace, but my better 'alf started buying pre-cooked egg-noodles. "But you only have to put the regular ones in boiling water for four minutes!!" I screamed, thrashing her with a wooden spoon, 'How easy do you want it to be?!" I'm pleased to report she has changed her wicked ways...

Best potato mash was SMASH , sadly long gone I think . The TV ad was reason enough to buy it.

I used to love that when I was a kid! I went through a weird-eating phase, like some kids do, and at one point all I would eat was bacon, toast and the variety of smash that had herbs in it.

I am fairly sure you can still get Smash, shame the adverts are long gone though.

At least grated cheese saves some effort (not admitting to using it), but pre-sliced cheese?

I'm pretty sure ther's something else in grated cheese in packet form because my gluten-free friend can't eat it.

I think there may be a sort of floury coating on the cheese presumably to stop it sticking.

As a child I used to get invited to go on holiday with my friend to keep her company (only child), and on holiday her parents believed in taking it easy and also spending money. So most meal times were either eaten out, or via M+S. I remember coming home and telling my mum that if she shopped there she could get baked potatoes with the cheese already on the top!!!

It's potato starch, used to stop it sticking. They are useful when serving 30 cubs at camp, however.

AS for smash. I know this is off topic but when I did my DofE we took some and didn't use it, so we fed the ducks on the river Derwent with them. As the lumps hit the water they start dissolving and we had a mash slick along the river ;)

I think a lot of the pre sliced goods are the damaged fruit / veges that can't be sold whole and have been saved by slicing the bad bits off - a good thing surely?

I remember M&S doing a pre-chopped onion. Anyway back to mash, over Christmas I bought myself a spud ricer, I've always been a masher type of guy, but these ricer things are every bit as good as people say they are.

I must also mention the addition of tomato ketchup to mash to make 'pink mash' which works particularly well with fish fingers and beans.

In the same way that ketchup and mayo mixed together makes a perfectly serviceable "thousand island dressing"
