I've been researching them this morning, and perhaps a helmet cam isn't the worst idea - I just thought it might be a bit bulky and over the top.

I suppose I'd prefer the footage not to be too jumpy, and some of the roads here are not exactly flat!

With a good quality mount the footage won't be that shaky. Swings and roundabouts as to what you want.

I guess if you do want to get even tho a camera is the way to go, but remember when you do get it up and running, it will record what you say and do in any situation too so be sure to keep the red mist even more in check because anyone you show footage to will be judging both sides.

I never realised how much I talked to myself when cycling until I fastened a camera to my (crash) helmet.

I have a ROAM on my lid and it's not that bad. You have to get used to a bit of extra weight but after 2 minutes you forget it's even there.

I'd recommend a Sony AS 10; the low light capabilities are amazing!

The GoPro Black is an awesome camera, but expensive! 60fps at 1080P is amazing though!

I hope you like your camera, and that it may act as a deterrant. I think a camera setup would have been a good stress buster for me, knowing that i could have just sent footage to taxi and Bus companies rather than having a shouting match with people in cars who couldn't hear me anyway!

True, I had one and the waterproof around the lense broke, dirt keps getting on the lense, the mount snapped (plastic rubbish), and then after I had cleaned the lense, the camera broke off the motherboard as I was putting it back into the camera body.
I just threw it in the end.

Not a problem - I got the ROAM from the US because it was 80 quid cheaper at the time so I got a good deal

You will need a helmet mount though - they're about 15 quid. The camera doesn't come with one, and you need a memory card as well as the supplied one (if they even supply one) won't last for a long time. It's 4GB every hour on the highest setting so it's worth getting a minimum of a 16gb card, which will give you 4 hours (ish) and a charge will last 3 hours or so. I got a 32gb one from Amazon for 14 quid I think - they're not expensive these days.

Only bad point is - the battery is not user replaceable. Bit annoying but not the end of the world. Price of being waterproof I suppose.

It'll be exactly that - my netbook (Asus 1215n, 1.8GHz Processor, 4gb RAM) struggles to play HD video. Anything more than 720p - forget it.
You could probably solve the problem with a cheapo graphics card if you don't already have one. You can get one for about 40 quid.

nice one- thanks. I suspect part of the problem also lies with the operator! It's not helped by the fact that the little round plastic sticky disc thing you attach the camera to, remains glued to a helmet that I left among some baguettes at an Upper Crust sarnie place at Bristol Station back in July. I'll look into the graphics card thing - thanks.
