Geraint Thomas is riding the TDF with a fractured pelvis. In what other sport would you see a top competitor doing his job if not in perfect shape? Football? certainly not , they only have to be touched slightly and they fall on the ground in agony. Cricket? they would need to move at all first to substain any injury. Rugby? possibly. Players have been known to play with some sort of injuries but then, it is a man's sport.
For me, cycling is the ultimate sport that requires stamina, courage, endurance, willpower and dedication. I only wish I could have all those qualities. Well done Geraint, you are a true sportsman.

Obviously Geraint is a top man.
But Football? How about Bert Trautmann? Played a cup final with a broken neck. And we all remember those pictures of Terry Butcher, bleeding for his country.
Cricket, Malcolm Marshall? Batted one handed with a broken arm.
Rugby, mans sport? What men visit joke shops for blood capsules???????

Yeah, but it's not like he has to run about. He just sits there and pedals.

I saw it on the telly yesterday and as far as I could tell he was sitting down the whole time.

Sport? Who are you trying to kid?

They didn't go on about how brave I was when I rode to school with a twisted ankle.

If cycling was a proper sport, there would just be a winner and lots of losers. As it is they give out jumpers for the one who goes up hills quickly or the one who's canny enough to save some puff for the final sprint... Yeah, right.

There's even a jumper for the one who is much better than you might think he'd be at that age. If that isn't a bit try-hard, what is?

It's not exactly football, is it?

You have to be tough to be at that level in cycling. Look at Hannah Barnes cutting her chin to the bone in a crash, then climbing back on to finish with blood all over her bike.

Some might say it is foolhardy.

Geraint Thomas may be able to ride through the pain, but if he were to crash again, he could risk serious injury.

In all top flights of sports athletes will play/continue through various states of injury, often quite severe, even footballers who may fall over when touched and ACT hurt, hunting for a free kick (to gain a sporting advantage) will continue to play when actually quite badly hurt. In sports like football, doping is often used not to improve performance, but maintain it through various injuries.

I was there in the track centre when they wheeled him through on a stretcher, lol!

My wife sustained a "small fracture" to he pelvis skiing a couple of years ago. So small that it took four different hospital and consultants to confirm it (First in France said yes, second in France said no, NHS in UK said no, Private in UK said yes and showed us the exact points* on the x-ray. Going from her experience, cycling with a fractured pelvis would be superhuman, mebbe a chip of the edge rather than a fracture of the ring?

* "Points" btw, as a single fracture of the pelvis is impossible. imagine one break in a polo mint.

He kept himself out of trouble, taking it very steadily at the back yesterday. I believe he's still scheduled for the team time trial today. There's no place for him as a passenger in that - it could be intensely painful but, a flat 25km, mercifully brief.
