So why is it possible to be able to walk faster than the "aircraft" overhead. Given the height it would have made the A380 look like a private jet. Name one aircraft of that size that can fly that slow? And I have seen what went onto become the Osprey, whilst still a Bell prototype.
This was on a regular final approach path to the airport by the way.

Unlicensed Alien Invasion
Magistrates are permitted to use 'reasonable force' to prevent an alien invasion of the UK - as long as the aliens don't possess a licence to invade. From section 9 of The Outer Space Act 1986.
I know. That's referring to an example you haven't given.
That was the example. My movement on the ground being faster than that of the "aircraft" overhead being put down to my perception of my walking speed versus the speed of the "aircraft".

I was told its all down to perception.

I have never understood why any intelligent person thinks that the so-called Fermi Paradox is even worth taking seriously. It's not remotely paradoxical and tends to assume both that we know an awful lot about the universe and/or that we are important in that universe. I would suggest that there is no reason to think that either proposition is true. We are, as Douglas Adams put it, likely to be entirely inisgnificant in terms of the vast spacetime of the universe (or even multiverse), and we don't even really know what we are looking for, so why should it seem in any way surprising that we haven't seen or heard from any aliens in the tiny eyeblink of time we have been looking?

I presume you're not a pilot CyclingDan?

I asked a friend of mine who is a pilot (for a major airline) whether pilots are permitted to switch their transponders off as you describe. His response was:

Yer I stand corrected. I thought they could. Double checked with a pilot friend and they when crossing the Atlantic tune it to 2000 upon 30 mins to track entry. I thought it was off but that wouldn't make sense considering that's what TCAS works off of. Logic should have told me otherwise.
Only time they can turn their transponder off is after engine shutdown. Or standby mode when they have vacated the runway. Which in turn makes the above i said incorrect bollocks.
Training for PPL, however not done too much.

While mixed with incorrect details the facts about oceanic airspace are correct, there is no radar coverage at its all exempt time at a perfect time.
Take this route for example
prawn 5120 5130 5140 5150 dogal

Radar contact would be established at Prawn and dogal but not at the coordinates. The perfect points in this example are prawn and dogal.
Come on then classic, show me the money.

As far as I understand, s.9 of the Outer Space Act 1986 refers to ensuring compliance with the licensing requirements for launching or operating a space object, and operations in space. By that I assume they're referring to Richard Branson getting celebs into space and Sky launching satellites, and not one-eyed green men trying to attack us. Please show me the bit I'm misunderstanding...
Its the assumption you make thats causing the problem. It governs all actions, regardless of those undertaking the activity.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

I prefer the printed version.

Personally, I don't feel like engaging in this thread any more.
We're dealing with someone who believes aliens can get here, yet we can't even get to the the Moon.
I'm out.
