The art of stopping

I'm not very good at it. I'm impatient to get to the end of my journey, so if I stop it's brief, blow my nose, scratch my privates and off we go.

I always read the, my ride today, thread and admire the pics. I'd love to emulate a lot of the posts but I know my inner voice would tell me to stop farking about and get on with the ride, plus my phone is in a case which would mean faffing about taking it out. so I'm no good at it. What about you?

I love leisurely rides; can only do them on full days out in unknown areas. On my own turf I'm always anxious to move on because there's usually some task I need to do at home and Mrs Gti has got a strop on so I have to get back and try to look useful.

I used to carry my camera in a small bar bag so it didn't take me long to stop and take a couple of pictures. Then I bought a better camera, but it is slightly too big for the bag so I am back to using my phone camera.

The problem is that the phone is carried in a waterproof bag, and the bag is carried in the Camelbak bag which I always wear on rides to carry tools, cash, spare clothing etc. I can't be bothered to stop, take the Camelbak bag off, unzip the compartment holding the phone bag, take the phone bag out, undo the bag, extract the phone, open the camera app, take the picture, shut down the phone, put the phone in the waterproof bag, the bag in the Camelbak bag, zip that up, put it on my back, remount and ride off ... so, I don't take many photos when I am out now!

I must buy a slightly larger bar bag and start carrying my camera. I'll take a look on eBay/Amazon in a minute ...

An alternative idea that I had was to get a helmet cam and program it to take photos at regular intervals, every 30 seconds, say. That way I would get hundreds of photos from every ride. It wouldn't take long when home to quickly delete 90+% of them and just keep the best ones.

Likewise I hate to stop. It's not that I want fast times, it's just something within me.
I have the same problem when driving. Going Southampton to Pitlochry (nearly 600 miles) I only stop when either me, the dogs, or the car needs to. Then the stop is as brief as possible (dog business, human business, fill car fuel tank, and off).

I've often thought about a weatherproof camera especially for bike riding. No need to worry about stuffing in a jersey pocket but just never prioritized buying one.

I've mastered stopping.

It's starting that's the issue.

When Mrs Gti was an area manager driving huge distances every day, not wanting to stop caused her a back injury which now makes sitting painful and probably will do for the rest of her life.

I probably spend too much time stopping for photos when I'm on my own. Recently I'll admit to taking phone pictures with the express aim of having something for 'My Ride Today', but it's nothing new, I always have taken a lot of pictures when I'm in scenic places. It's a surprise I got around Scotland by bike last summer, the amount of time I stood beside the bike with camera in hand.

I do stop, but never bother taking any pictures and soon move off once I've eaten, taken on some fluids, and checked my emails ... ;)
