I know what modes are, but in 50+ years of playing I've never needed to play one. I know some of what I play could be analysed as being Ionian or Mixolydian or Dorian, but I've never needed to know that, or reference that, when I play. I just pluck a minor scale, or a major scale with a flattened seventh, or (usually) just play around the melody and add passing notes or "colour" notes that I like the sound of.

I think modes are a step too far to be worrying about at the moment, just getting my head around the 5 positions, and being able to incorporate them into a solo, learning where to start depending on the key, and following the chords, is more than enough at the moment

I was also of that mindset until I made a loop that was vaguely reminiscent of FZ's Black Napkins... C#m and Dmaj.
The C#m pentatonic scale didn't quite fit as it has no D and Dmaj pentatonic has no C#, which is when i realised that i had to think about modes in order to play along to those two chords.

I found this resource useful: https://www.all-guitar-chords.com/scales

*edited to add the # to the C
