And I'm going to respond by saying that the lack of a decent sailing venue in London means that Dorset got the honours! So now I'm going ask why the similar lack of a decent MTB venue in London didn't lead to the Peak District/Yorkshire/Lancashire/Lake District/Wales/Scotland hosting the MTB events?
Dorset/Hants is where London goes sailing. London goes mtb'ing in the Home Counties. Yoiu don't need a decent mtb venue, in the sense I think you mean it, for Olyimpic off road events. World Cup XC/Downhill/4X it ain't.

I think you should have a spectacular MTB venue for an Olympic offroad event! Yes, you can make a competitive course from a few lumpy fields but it is hardly in keeping with the spirit of the sport is it!

I agree. But the Olympic authorities don't always seem to. I think security and spectator access, and ease of TV coverage seem to trump all other considerations. XC mtb not being that much of a spectator sport ime anyway...

I'm looking forward to going to the hockey - a sport I played as a youth and should be exciting - and it is in the Olympic Village area.

The Olympics will, I reckon, be OK.

The facilities will be good and as soon as the events start we'll be strangely hooked on synchronised diving etc

The fact it's here and I can visit the Olympic area adds a certain frisson.

Every major sporting event has exclusive sponsors - I went to the cricket world cup in South africa in 2003 and we were searched for the wrong brand of Cola etc.

If you want to boycott sponsored sport I suspect you'll struggle Cunobelin.

My 13 year old nephew's football team has a local sponsor as do all the other teams he plays against.

Zeb Koe goes to his local chemist and notices they're selling Olympic condoms, must try these he thinks. Takes them home and tells his wife, 'what's so special about them?' she asks.
Well they are Gold, Silver, and Bronze coloured he replies, and what colour will you be wearing tonight Zeb? 'the Gold one of course' well why don't you wear the Silver one and come second for once! ;)

I think the chance of the games having positive press in the UK are slim to none, especially in Murdochs rags.

In comparison, I think the actual games will be a lot of fun, and whilst they have been expensive now that we're committed we may as well go along with it and enjoy them for what they are. Moaning about what a bloody waste of money it all is won't make it any better. Sit back, relax, watch people do stuff we (or at least I) could never do, and then forget about it.

I've got front row seats for all the events I want to see and it hasn't cost me a penny.

Let the corporates buy the advertising, and let LOCOG make as much on ticket sales as they can - someone has to pay for it, and the less that comes out of the Treasury the better.
