Many of the questions were not covered in my history classes when I was at school. We covered the world wars in microscopic detail, very briefly the Kings and Queens but not what they were known for and my history project was changes in women's fashion from 17th century to early 20th century.

Exactly, this stuff only has any value if you've learned it!

I didn't do much of it at school, but I've acquired a bit of knowledge in the course of a couple of degrees, (and from hearing my Mum talk about her degree). That, and a talent for remembering trivia, which is good for pub quizzes, but unlikely to help me earn a living!

I'd rather have learned Scottish history than the ENTIRE year we had to spend on US history. They somehow managed to leave out all the fun bits. Meole Brace Secondary Modern School, you have a lot to answer for!!!

Beleive me, Scottish history seemed to begin with Alexander the..... erm.... 3rd? falling off his horse and breaking is neck, before taking an unhealthily obsessed detour via John Baliol, Bannockburn and Robert The Bruce, before seemingly ending at Culloden.

I think it just irked me that history at school was so fragmented. We didn't learn any Welsh or Scottish history at all (the bits I come across I find fascinating by the way). The Civil War I have only really understood in the last year or so because it interested me to find out. My home county of Shropshire has some of the most amazing history, which we never covered: Caradoc (known to the Romans as Caractacus), The city of Viroconium (4th largest in Roman Britain), Owain Glyndwr (who fought fiercely in the area), The Battle of Shrewsbury (mentioned by Shakespeare), Thomas Telford (we did learn a bit about him but by no means all), Lord Rowland Hill, Admiral Benbow, the worlds first iron frame building, and much more... I find this fascinating stuff so why the did they want to tell us, at great length, about trading boats on the Mississippi instead?
