the death of a young old friend

Live each day as it comes. If you haven't seen some one for 10 years would you have make the effort in the next ten years?

Death is a fact of life make the most of people when they are around and keep in contact if you want the relationship to continue. If there is no communication with some one for a long time surely there is no relationship, unless they direct are family? People come into and leave most one's lives fairly frequently. We can't, well I can't, hope or be bothered to keep in contact with all of them and certainly ones that don't reciprocate. Regret and guilt for what could have been can be destructive and delusional. Sorry to be somewhat harsh but I'm not sentimental certainly not for people I've not heard from in years.

It's not about regret, guilt or even being sentimental crankarm.

People do drift in and out of our lives, that's a fact. And, as you suggest, we all accept that and carry on with our own lives, no problems. It still comes as a shock though we you hear of the death of an old friend. I'd say you're quite unusual if you feel nothing at all when you receive such news.

Jane, that's quite a story. I guess the 'near miss' of meeting her made the loss more acute; her death leaving a kind of unfinished business. I feel for you, you have my sympathies.

A good friend of about 25 years' standing died 10 years ago with liver failure. I thought he was off work through general stress and tiredness until I got a call to go over and say goodbye to him, it was a shock to see him lying in a hospital bed, half conscious, tubes everywhere, his stomach all distended and he all yellow and blotchy. He was an incredibly popular bloke, his funeral was massive and brought all of Ripon to a halt. Even now I think of him often and there's a big gap in my life that can't ever be filled. A group of us have a reunion every year but without Liam it's not the same.
