The only 'pegging' that I know involves damp washing and clotheslines ...

I am carrying out an experiment, which is to see how long I can resist the temptation to Google it. The experiment began at 18:42 on 21st Dec, 2016!

I don't need to google it ^_^

It doesn't work, I tried it and all I get is a faceful of door pillar and no view of any approaching anything. If I could see anything it would only be what's directly alongside and not what's approaching from behind. Anyway, I've become so conditioned to checking the mirror before I open the door that I do it every single time without thinking which means I see all.

I'm sure it's some horrible twist on the already disturbing reach around.

The phrase "Dutch reach", or the technique?

I was thinking of the technique this morning. I have a little table area built in to the end of my bed and for the second time this year I accidentally swatted my morning mug of tea off it when reaching over for the mug. I think a 'Dutch Reach' would solve the problem because I would be looking towards the mug rather than fumbling for it!

From the OP, "In the Netherlands it is simply called how you open your car door". It figures that the term "Dutch Reach" would be coined by people who are not actually Dutch.

Just got chatting to a Dutch lady while walking the dog (I'd always suspected she was crazy Dutch because of her accent).

She'd never heard of of it ever, and received no instruction in how to open the door.

I now need to find more Dutch people from somewhere to continue this research.

The thing that strikes me about the video that's revived this thread is the gormlessness of many of the cyclists portrayed. For all that drivers could do better at checking to the rear before opening their doors, you'd think cyclists would be more aware of the fact that cars have doors that open, and adapt their riding accordingly. Do enough high speed close passes of stationary cars and sooner or later you will come a cropper. Don't do it kids! As a rule I'm one of the grumpiest of old men when it comes to bitching about elf 'n safety gorn mad (4 year old kids on scooters in the park with vast pink buckets on their heads - grrr) but this kind of behaviour does make me wonder about whether people shouldn't have to receive at least some kind of training before they're allowed out on the roads on what is, when all's said & done, a very vulnerable piece of technology.
