The end of own brand spirits in Scottish supermarkets?

I won a bottle once and took one drink out of it. Nearly spat it straight back out. More like TCP than any whisky I've ever had.

Same here. I bought a bottle from Asda as it was on offer. Honestly, one sip and I took it back as I genuinely thought there was a problem with it.

I'm bit like that with white wine, having had a bad experience age 16. Strangely, various over-refresment occurunces with beer have never put me off that.

I am like that with rum since, aged 18, at 08;00 morning, a work colleage put his arm around my neck and said "i got pissed on rum last night". Then he breathed in my face........I was so close to throwing up and have never drunk rum since.

Re Aldi whisky......if we want a bog standard whisky with eg lemonade both me and Mrs Dave far prefer Highland Earl to Bells(do not like the taste) etc. Out of the normal grain whiskies I prefer Grouse and can enjoy that with a drop of water......but only buy it when on offer.

I bought and opened a bottle of their quarter cask today. Fantastic whisky.

Hard to find the original quarter cask these days.

On the Laphroig point, I still prefer the proper 10 year old. Tried their quarter cask and wasn't so keen.

I like both but agree that the 10yo is the better.

People will just go across to England to buy it, anyone going down to England for work will buy spirits to bring home, another stupid idea that sounds good, in reality it won’t work

Not sure I understand that. We're talking about Highland Earl, an Aldi brand which is exclusive to their stores.

I just meant that the cheaper brands are side by side the more expensive ones in a lot of other outlets, so for a lot of people it will be a simple choice.

Seriously......I know its all personal taste but I really find those peaty whiskies disgusting. I do enjoy a sweeter Speyside type.

You might like Highland Park (from Orkney). But then I like rum, so don't go by my recommendation!

If the unavailability of a cheap white cider or spirits carry oot off puts you off I don't think you'll be missed.

Ballycastle (fake Baileys) is a loss leader. Profit margins on most groceries are around 2% and the bulk of their profits come via the special buys.

Best to choose something rather fine that you suspect, but that they haven't specifically told you, they don't like. This way, you've given them a nice present, but they've still always got a nice drop to offer when you visit
