Went to my first ever football match yesterday and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Despite now being an adopted Bristolian I have married into having to support Preston and I'm pleased to say "we" thoroughly beat the home side 2 nil. It was a great atmosphere and really exciting game to watch, bearing in mind I'm not actually interested in football and have never really played even at school. I skived games lessons as much as I could get away with as I didn't much like running about in the rain getting bullied by the stronger kids. I was pleased to see both sets of fans intermingled whilst walking back into town / the station without a hint of hostility nevr mind trouble. During the match there was some good natured chanting with, for example, a Bristol fan sarcastically "conducting" the visitors' singing and so on. The home fans had a rather good, presumably official, drummer who helped things along, matching the action or accompanying their own chanting. Tickets were about 30 quid which seemed perfectly reasonable to me and a pint would have been £6.50 which is only a modest premium over Bristol pub prices, and perhaps par for the dearer pubs.

I'm not about to buy a season ticket or anything but would happily go again

On the great goals subject, Le Tissiers was the best I saw, on an attended basis, turning the dullest match possible, into an incredible experience .
February 1994 it says. 31 years ago and it still feels a yesterday moment.

Things have certainly improved dramatically over the years. I rarely go these days but grew up going to football as a kid in the 80's. When I try to explain what football matches were like back then to people who have only been to modern games and stadia, I can see the look of horror on their faces 😂

Maybe slightly better than the 70s. Pitches where grass was a rarity, defenders who made sure that if the ball wasn't booted into the stand the opposition player almost was and a badly performing team was because they had all been out on the town the night before.

Sixth in the table and they sack the manager. "Self entitled" doesn't come into it.

After watching the Ratcliffe interview with Gary Neville last year it was fairly clear Ratcliffe sacks anyone that comes up against him (Dan Ashton being the obvious example). I assume he and Amorim have fallen out over Amorim's level of control over transfers and therefore he was quickly gotten rid of.

Liverpool were back to thier dire play last night. A good job that Leeds weren't much better but at least they could rightly claim to be the away team.
Even the Anfield 'faithful' were booing at the end.
I feel sorry for the fans that paid good money to sit in the freezing cold while watching that.

How much would it be for a ticket for none season ticket holders Dave? Without any knowledge of Liverpool's prices, or any team's prices, apart from Accrington's and Blackburn's, I'd guess about £38.🤔

Long time since I went to a 'normal' game (just been to special days eg legends games) but eg......... ..
Normal league, main stand..... £50-60
Champions league.......depends on oposition..... £100s
I understand but not sure that BIG games ie when City visit it over £250.

Is it even possible to get a ticket without entering a ballot? It's not at SJP, and while I sort of get the reasoning it does seem a bit unfair, likewise the tiered pricing structure.

I dont think it is possible even though the official website lists all the prices.
I recall, back in the 60s/70s we just turned up (no ticket) and chose whether to go in the Kop or the Paddock. On some occasions we were forced to use the Anfield Road away supporters end.

I'm pretty suspicious about the ballot system anyway. A couple of guys I work with are both members at Newcastle and have been for several seasons. One of them has got a ticket pretty much every time he's entered and the other nowt. No way that's random.

I don't think it is at any PL team these days hence this big surge with the online reselling and the fake tickets going for hundreds of pounds. My Brother in law is a Liverpool fan and he has never been able to get a ticket and never will I don't think. I know it is the old cliché, but sadly football stopped being about the fans a long time ago, certainly in the PL.

Indeed what would professional football manager know that Super Jim doesnt!

Its also rather odd that Jason Wilcox is director of football, a man with very little track record of such jobs or management at the highest level.

Amorim must be relieved to be out of there, surrounded by idiots and trying to manage with one hand behind his back.

Varies hugely at City. £15 for adults for Exeter; £60 minimum for a big PL game, even if you can get tickets at all, which will go within minutes of getting on sale.

I know it is obviously ego that is the reason why these mega wealthy businessmen think they can run large sporting institutions or pretty much anything they turn their hand too, but the sheer number of examples which show they can't should maybe give them food for thought.

The rare successes at the top level are those where they provide the money and leave the Manager to take charge, Man City and Liverpool being the two obvious examples of the last decade.
