And what happened in the first game of said football?
Maybe you'd rather pretend everything is rosy.

I'm well aware of what happened as I thought my post made clear.

Although it wasn't immediately obvious to the viewer, it was dealt with swiftly and efficiently by the officials and the police.

Not sure what your last comment is about, as a football fan I'm aware of what happens, and the numerous measures to prevent racism (and other abuses) in the game.

You seem to object to a first post being one which mentioned issues within the game

Nope, I just think it's weird, especially when you started it with "How depressingly predictable" but whatever.

There's an NCAP Soccerball thread for this kind of chat, as @No Ta Doctor pointed out.

Well it IS depressingly predictable which is why I posted in the first place.

I follow football but I'm far more engaged and interested in rugby but the headlines in today papers about the start of the football season sparked a reaction which is another season but same old problems.

Something that is depressingly predictable is rugby fans lecturing football fans on what's wrong with their sport, especially when it comes to the relationship between players and officials.

BTW - some of the most racist, misogynistic, homophobic and bigoted behaviour I've seen has been by rugby teams on a messy night out.

Especially when said rugby fan hasn't actually engaged with the Rugby thread...

Like I said, whatever.

I'm quite looking forward to Rangers v Alloa, especially if Rangers are as mince as they have been domestically so far this season.

Who is lecturing?

I made a reasonable, polite comment about a sport I take an interest in.

Seems I've touched a nerve or two.

Perhaps best to just bury head in sand and pretend all is sweetness and light.

As for relationships between players and officials, rugby is 99% incredibly respectful.
Any instances of a player being out of line is an anomaly whereas unfortunately in football it's the norm.

And yet you've yet to acknowledge that the racist behaviour was a single person shouting abuse - that's one in about 61,000 - who was ejected from the ground and has now been arrested. You've taken one dickhead and concluded the whole sport has a problem. Far from things never changing, this is a vastly different experience to when black players would be abused by entire stands and terraces and when Arsenal fans away to Chelsea would be spat on and called "N***** lovers".

I'm not interested in rugby refereeing. It's a different sport, with a different history and sociology. It's got no relevance to football.

Answer - a centre forward.

Sure it's hugely better in grounds than it was in the 70s and 80s, but despite all the efforts, there are still, regularly, morons spouting racial abuse in football grounds in the Uk, and very widely in eastern Europe.
Yes the individual has been identified and arrested, but it keeps happening.
To say otherwise, or deflect onto politics is brushing the issue under the carpet.

It's not deflecting, or pretending everything is rosy, it's a political issue and this isn't the forum for it.

Decent enough game between Rangers and Alloa, and it was good to see big Sammon getting a run out. Loved him at Killie, particularly when he linked up so well with Eremenko.

Nice to see genuine people / football fans rallying around the young girl who has just signed for your ladies team. Apparently she had taken a fair bit of abuse.

Absolutely. I only read about it after the event and I'm glad I didn't see what was said but I can imagine. Our supporters association has sponsored her shirt for the season which is cracking.

Her response was brilliant too:

My friends were still being spat on and racially abused at Chelsea in the early 2000s. We're nowhere near perfect - online abuse particularly has escalated alarmingly - but in the actual grounds In England there's been huge progress.

Look at it this way - the average Premier League attendance last season was just over 40k. For the ten matches that make up a round, that's 400,000 matchgoers each weekend, 15,360,627 over the full season. Now how many racist incidents were there in grounds? It's pretty miniscule, and it's almost always one or two dickheads. If we don't see racist incidents in the rest of this round and the next two rounds, then that one idiot at Anfield will be ONE IN 1.2 MILLION. That's not a systemic issue.
