Sep Blatter said Upton Park was one of the most atmospheric grounds in the world. Night matches in particular would have the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. And as you say, very loyal support. I've not been to the new stadium so I've got no first hand experience, is it as bad as some fans say?
There's not a lot of atmosphere probably because it's it was built for athletics not football.Saying that I don't think it's as bad as people say.
Any ground is quiet when you're not doing well. I can remember being at the Boleyn when you could hear a pin drop.Mind you that was after they got rid of the terracing.

Probably will be playing Blackburn next season.
Will have to change it from the London Stadium to the Dust Bowl!
Only if you drop two divisions!! ☹️☹️

I think the only thing West Ham did for football was introducing the start of football hooliganism.

They did not. My first memory of trouble at a match was I believe 1965, when Everton came to Upton Park and their fans ran riot. Prior to that it was unheard of. It's just that when it took off we did it better than most

Looking at the crowd numbers from this round of First Division fixtures in 1983 you can see how the game was dying on it's feet, with hooliganism playing a major part in that -

I think five of those games were at grounds that no longer exist.

Sunderland used to play at Roker Park. The stadium of light was built on the site of the former Wearmouth Colliery.
Of course.

HIghbury is weird, because it's gone, but it's still there...

The East Stand facade and the famous Marble Halls of the entrance were Grade 1 listed, so they had to be preserved when they turned it into flats.

This is what the entrance looks like now - could do with a wash n brush up imo

I have to be honest I wasn’t expecting that, Chelsea 1 Villa 2, still winning, another scalp, just maybe…..

Squad depth is going to be key, can they attract a few key players in to keep the momentum.

Gunners next and they are still smarting from the match at VP a few weeks ago.

We were smarting, but we're feeling a lot better this morning thank you, though possibly slightly hungover.

Highlight of the evening was actually when 3 Man U fans in the otherwise solidly Arsenal pub cheered their late winner at home to Wolves. About 103 Arsenal fans absolutely erupted when we saw the flag was up

I didn’t see it, but my daughters boyfriend who is a gunner said it was chaotic and could have been 5 : 4

You won’t find many villains complaining, we have probably won when we shouldn't. Losing at Arsenal between Christmas & NY is hardly embarrassing.

There were periods of fairly open play. In the first half we seemed to leave you space to run through the midfield (lots of wishing Rice wasn't injured!). Don't think there were all that many big chances though and some last ditch tackling helped us out. We weren't very creative with the possession we had, and dinøt move the ball quick enough when countering. Lots of moaning. If it were boxing it would be a narrow Villa on points victory.

Second half was a different matter, we bossed the midfield and looked ridiculously dangerous - Ødegaard and Zubimendi were buzzing all over the place. Merino could have earned himself a 2nd yellow through stupidity, but Onana had also escaped lightly from a dive in the box 1st half (pretty much everyone goes down easy nowadays, us included, but that was a bit shoddy really - 2/10 for acting skills). We produced some moments of real quality - some Ødegaard through balls, Trossard superb, and Jesus resurrected (pls don't tell him it's Xmas not Easter) to score with his 2nd touch - the first being to sell a defender and shoot it onto his right.

4-0 up and we relaxed a bit (subs as well) and you got control a bit more, scoring the consolation goal and creating almost all your XG of the game in the last ten minutes or so.

That's my slightly dubious recollection anyway, I may have had a bit to drink and there were a lot of loud Arsenal fans either cheering or moaning according to context.

And just for the record, like many Arsenal fans I never had anything against Emery - he seems like a decent bloke and has an incredible record in the UEFA cup (as was). He wasn't a great communicator in English though, and just wasn't really the right bloke for the job for us, straight out of Wenger times. The fanbase was split and toxic, and it was clear the players didn't really know what they were supposed to be doing, chopping and changing every week. He's learnt a lot since then I think - not least improving his English so he's understood. And no, I've got no issue with him not shaking hands, that's just soap opera stuff the tabloids use o sell their stuff.
