Hi all - being a noob and all have been thinking about this - what do people tend to do as preparation on the day of the ride itself ?(I'm sure the answer in a lot of cases will be "a day's work, cycle home, quick bite to eat".....).

I've thunk ahead and booked the day off, but should I spend it trying to sleep as much as possible or fettling the bike to within an inch of its life??
neither

sort the bike out the week before, giving yourself plenty of time to get stuff done. And I don't think you'll gain much by sleeping other than by feeling a little more relaxed if you are able to grab a nap for a couple of hours. Just resign yourself to feeling sleepy the next day.

If the bike is fine, don't mess with it! At times I dread fettling, as I often find something else to clean/adjust/fix/replace. This causes stress.

Sleep if you can and lay off the caffeine. Relax and take it easy. Trust us, staying up all night on the bike gets easier with practice. ;)

Once you get used to this night cycling lark you can follow my usual routine:
* full day in the office on Friday
* commute by bike
* spend an hour or so after work pretending to sleep (sometimes I get lucky and actually sleep)
* cycle all the way to HPC (ignore if well outside London)

I have been known to alter the above:
* have a drink after work
* do Critical Mass
* join friends for pancakes
* visit a public house
* head out to HPC
This is not recommended for those of a more sensible disposition.

Fettle and make ready the bike the night before.
On the day I Leave work hour earlier. Get home, do stuff, eat, then go bed for few hours try to get some shut eye.

I tried to sleep a bit before the first one I did, but I find it hard to get to sleep in the early evening. In fact the staying awake bit is surprisingly easy. You get a bit of an energy dip - for me it comes after the halfway stop when it's sometimes fairly cold - but you can just be in a bit of a daze for a while and the bacon butty will get you through it until the dawn comes to pick you up again. Spend your day off relaxing and cooking yourself something nice for dinner - I reckon about 9:30 is a good time to eat. Maybe a glass of wine with dinner but don't listen to Andrij about the pre-ride booze session - he's a monstrous drinker and can see us all under the table. Besides, you can get absolutely langered as soon as you get there and sleep on the train home, then drool in an attractive drunken sweaty way all over whoever you are going home to on Saturday.

Behave. Bloody vegetarians. If God had meant us to be vegetarian, He'd have made pigs out of lentils etc etc*

*I'm not really this much of a twat. I'm just bitter because I fell for the soggy sandwich marketing ploy.
you can always queue for a cheese sandwich.....

I am! :biggrin: Marketing supremo Dellzeqq, in one of his rasher moments, (like Kieran's sandwiches they come thick and fast...oh OK then , thin and slow...:rolleyes:) is being hired by 'Dr' Gillian McKeith to launch a range of health kits for the mass market. Amusement for all the family with "Funny Faeces", "Bandage or Banana?" and other such diversions.

I think there will be two queues - the fast-track bacon sandwich queue and the other queue.

At the moment 29 out of 79 have opted for bacon. I just thought you'd like to know

Would some of these erstwhile chaps like to come out to play on a Friday Night?

I tried to get a couple of hours before the first one I did. I didn't sleep and it didn't make any difference. Now I don't bother and just put my feet up for a few hours before heading up to town. I also find the SMRbH helps me get through the next day and only once have I succumbed to a nap on the Saturday. That was a mistake as it took me a while to get my sleep pattern back to normal. Having said that, I think the choice of breakfast refreshments in Whitstable might influence sleep patterns on the Saturday ;)

Cheers.
