My favourites as a kid were at one time or another:

And then I spent the rest of my childhood reading Railway magazines and books

Edward was my favorite. Older and with a decent work ethic. He got on with the job and didn't moan and winge, nor play tricks, like the others.

Toby is next favorite, for similar reasons.

Then Mavis, an early bit of 'skirt' for a young boy into trains!

I always liked Toby and BoCo the best because they were different from the rest. I don't really remember Mavis, but I'd have liked her too no doubt!

Yes, BoCo was another of those 'sensibly getting the job done' locos.

Duck was another favorite engine, but more so because I liked the 57xx pannier tank locos in general.

I once embarrassed myself totally by crying at a 'Little House on the Prairie' book. They had just crossed a wide, deep creek in their wagon and 2 miles up the road realised the dog wasn't with them (presumed drowned). I was inconsolable but a few pages later the dog trotted up as they made camp for the night .

I can even remember where I was sat (in front of the coal fire) and what jumper I had on at the time . I think if the dog had drowned in the book I would have been carted off by the men in white coats that summer.

Yes, BoCo was another of those 'sensibly getting the job done' locos.

Its just a pity the real ones weren't so sucessful!!

Say, when the finally get D5705 running again, it'll surely be in VERY high demand to play BoCo at Thomas events around the country!! A real life BoCo!!

Anyway, when I worked in a special needs school, I always liked 'The Tiger who came to tea', as the copy we had had furry bits on the illustrations of the Tiger, a lovely addition to have!

There are one series of books (and also a TV series) that stand out above others for me though purely for their artwork.

I have mentioned these before, but I don't care, the artwork in these really does deserve to be seen!:
