I still haven't heard anything as beautifully haunting and touching as "And the band played waltzing Matilda." Other versions are available but I think Ronnie Drew did it best:

I've long been an admirer of Eric Bogle who wrote that one along with many other fine songs like 'The Green fields of France' and 'Leaving Nancy' which are more often known for covers of them by other people - though personally I prefer his own original versions. Here's one of his that always brings a lump to my throat.
