Mrs D has long since lost track of my toys. When she says "when did you get that?" I pretend to look innocent and reply "you bought it for my Birthday last year!" I can't believe the bluff worked, but she not only fell formit but also apologised for doubting me!

Not exactly sure that she was being totally honest in giving the impression that she believed you!!

I've been buying quite a few things from Halfords lately: a bunch of bike tyres,.some.bike.lighta, and more to follow.

Good prices are hard to pass up BUT I will still support my LBS wherever possible. It just so happened it wasn't possible for those particular tyres I wanted.

My LBS just gives on prices for a lot of things

He just tells me to get it online as he can;t compete on price

He keeps a certain stock of certain tyres that he will use - but anything outside that he just doesn;t try anymore
He doesn;t mention Halfords - but it is sort of implied that that counts as well

I also get a Student Beans discount, then I can get another discount via work's 'voucher' scheme - those two knock about 15% off. It's just a bit of a faff. Log into Student Beans, ask for discount code. Then log into work, and buy a virtual gift voucher for another 8% off. But, it soon adds up.

I do similar, but pass through Quidco first

I buy a voucher for just under to the nearest pound. Then pay 10p on my card.

Indeed ... on a points card too!

I've had a trade card for a couple of years and have not found any item yet which has been cheaper (with the trade card)

We aren't talking about trade cards here.

We are talking about savings schemes which our employers subscribe to, which allow you to purchase what are effectively gift vouchers or cards, at a discounted rate. The one my company uses give a 6% discount for Halfords, so I can pay £94 for a voucher with a face value of £100, and Halfords will then accept the voucher at face value (the voucher can be for any whole number of £).

I think their pricing generally is pretty keen, discounts or not. I replaced MrsF's pads, and the usual service items (filters etc) - all Bosch, much cheaper than I could find anywhere. I used to just ignore Halfords for service parts !

Interesting if I order by post a £3.96 inner tube they discount £2.99. Presume it should say added, or charged, not discounted

No. "Free standard delivery" i.e no minimum order. They've obviously changed the delivery policy but to make the website work it applies it as a discount
